A political system in which open floodgates are only ever one election away is not viable in the jet age: we have to win every time, they only have to win once. The technological context makes mass immigration a permanent threat, which demands a permanent solution that takes immigration out of the hands of politicians entirely.

Despite stinking the place out in almost every regard, I’ll always appreciate Starmer for delivering net-negative immigration (it seems) this year, finally. He could’ve opened the floodgates and imported millions of new voters for Labour, but he didn’t, and he did us a huge favour. Illegal immigration was a horror show though. Everyone expects Burnham to open the floodgates, like they did with Starmer, but let’s see what happens.
