This analysis is complete and utter nonsense - it’s what happens when people with no experience of politics at all play at being “analysts”. No one, on becoming leader, has high name recognition. (GHL’s is remarkably high, in fact, undoubtedly because he has done so well in Cape Town.) But this changes fast for 3 reasons: (1) the new leader gets a massive free media boost the moment he gets elected, (2) the party spends significant amounts on promoting the new leader and (c) - most important of all - nothing drives name recognition like an election campaign when tens of millions are spent on comms with his face and his voice delivering the core message. This is exactly what happened with every leader the DA has had since Tony Leon, and doubtless before that too, although that was before my time.
The Common Sense@CommonSense_ZA

Geordin Hill-Lewis, the likely future leader of the DA, is facing a hidden challenge: despite his success as Cape Town’s mayor, 59% of South Africans don’t know him. While many believe his leadership could improve South Africa’s future, his lack of visibility, especially among black voters, could be a major roadblock. With the DA counting on him to turn things around, will Hill-Lewis be able to break through the noise and make his mark on national politics? @RyanCoetzee I thought it funny that they didn't even know there is a word for 'one-sided monogamy'. Very old word in fact.

With the exception of that ginger guy, whose heart isn’t really in it (though his wallet is), everyone in that Manosphere documentary is thick as two bricks. Clear correlation with basic intelligence. It’s an ideology for dimwits. Social media a great leveler, but not always for the best.

I have not witnessed any politician navigating between his own considerable failures as shamelessly as Cilliers Brink does. He points to the manifestations of his failures and blames them on the current mayor, with a straight face, while she is busy fixing them.

Is there anyone on this benighted app that doesn’t think one of (a) Israel is genocidal for wanting a buffer between itself and Hezbollah or (b) Israel is quite right to depopulate an entire region in pursuit of its security? Every “debate” on X seems to offer a stark binary - very often what is called a false dichotomy - as if only two policy options exist and everyone must choose between them. It’s tedious.

@AtholT @helenzille Athol, really respected you as a politician, but this strategy of ASA to focus all your energy on trying to delegitamise the DA is limp and desperate. Moreover it makes you come across as weak - makes the DA look stronger. Is this really the best you can do?

@RyanCoetzee For me, it's close between Mad Men, The Sopranos, and The Wire (have never seen Deadwood!).

I am an Afrikaner. I have all the freedom I want. The Bill of Rights in our constitution protects my rights. I am fully integrated in the South African nation. Demanding special treatment for Afrikaners is not in the interest of that group. Stop parotting MAGA

@adamgreeney 5) In SA, there are more private security service employees than actual police (go check this too, 'honey'). You don't know what you're talking about; you're super privileged, addicted to drama, and used to opulence and comfort.

@adamgreeney 4) If they haven't been victims themselves, they know one or more people who have been (and this means brutal murders, rapes, assaults, house robberies etc). Typically involves Guns, knives, rocks, pangas (you'd call this a machete in the US).

@TopsideMartin @MaxduPreez I mean, it's simply a fact. And pointing out that the US is a failed state isn't exactly "american exceptionalism." What are the gun violence stats for SA? Is it really worse than the US?

@adamgreeney @MaxduPreez It's your American exceptionalism that makes you think it's worse there, or even remotely close to what it's like in SA.

@TopsideMartin @MaxduPreez Um, maybe look at America. It's worse. Americans literally *can't leave their house* without fear of violence. We just had another mass shooting in Ohio, for fucks sake.

@SanzaMakoko @MaxduPreez Whereas proclaiming something as 'vague and shallow' does not even constitute any argument at all. It's just you making broad statements. You can copy and paste that under every tweet you don't like - it literally means nothing and requires no intellectual effort.

@adamgreeney @MaxduPreez Having violent crimes in your country is not the same as having a grave, systemic, and dire problem with the issue. In this respect, SA is one of the worst (if not THE worst). We have it to such an extent that it impedes various of our freedoms.
