"Lou Brock was a little scared of Bob Veale sometimes, because Bob was nearsighted and would take off his glasses and pitch anyway.
Willie McCovey, too.
One day, Bob took those glasses off and threw the ball 100 miles per hour at McCovey.
I asked Veale what happened, and he said:
‘My glasses were too wet, and I wanted to show him I could throw a strike without my glasses.’
That pitch was 10 feet high."
Manny Sanguillen.
“No man should ever lose if he can pitch the way Bob Veale did that day.
Why, I could see the blue flame rising from his fastball way out in left field.”
Willie Stargell.
At the age of 58, Bob Veale stayed connected to his baseball roots by working as a groundskeeper at 'Rickwood Field' two days a week.
He played an important role in preserving the storied old ballpark he played in as a child.
“We didn’t know we were breaking segregation laws.
We just thought we were playing baseball.
I had white friends, kids I played ball with all the time.
We weren’t thinking about integrating anything.
We were just playing baseball.”
As a boy, Bob Veale played on the sandlots of Birmingham with both blacks and whites.
"Piper Davis made me a bat boy and let me pitch batting practice regularly.
I used to pitch batting practice for the White Barons and come back and do the same for the Black Barons.
When game started I went to the concession stands and did the things I normally did".
Bob Veale, 1947.

In 2002, I climbed Mt. Washington and set a record that changed my life.
7.6 miles. 4,500 feet. 12% grade. Time: 49:24.
I was 23. A former MTBer from East Lyme, CT.
That day I beat Tyler Hamilton’s record, he set right after he finished 4th at the Tour de France.
It launched everything. My first pro contract with Saturn. A call from Lance. And eventually, my first WorldTour contract with Fasso Bortolo.
A lot has happened in the 24 years since.
My career was launched and lost. The identity that came and went with it. Cancer. A partial amputation. Lost fitness. Years of not knowing who I was without the bike.
I’m not sure I can do this. That’s the truth.
Sub-49 on Mt. Washington has never been done.
There are so many reasons I’m not the guy for it.
I’m 48. Dad of 5. Partial amputee. Business owner. Coming back from 11 years away from hard training.
But the audaciousness behind the attempt is the whole point.
And this time I have something I didn’t have in 2002. My own TTM Performance Model.
Now as a coach I’m putting my money where my mouth is.
My TTM doesn’t sugarcoat anything. It lays out the gap between where I am today and where I need to go in stark detail from to power, zone duration, durability, weight, mental strength, technique. Every facet and milestone, each point on the progression is mapped out.
My hope is that it takes me somewhere I stopped believing was possible. For me, that place is becoming a world class climber.
See you August 15, 2026. 🌙

@grok @BBowman78 @JimmyTrdinich @Pirates @gbrowniepoints The Parrot was one of the mascots to follow the San Diego Chicken which debuted in 1974. The Phanatic was in 1978. Pittsburgh doesn’t imitate Philadelphia. That’s why Sheetz (1952) is better than Wawa (1964).
English

Before the Pirate Parrot debuted in 1979, the Pirates' first official mascot was Bucco Bruce—a swashbuckling pirate introduced in the early 1970s. He was a fan favorite with high-energy antics at games. The Parrot was created to capitalize on the mascot craze sparked by the Phillie Phanatic.
English

On this date in 1979, the @Pirates officially unveiled their new mascot – the Pirate Parrot. Hey @gbrowniepoints, is that you in there?

Twos and threes are the best time of YOUR life. Every day is a new discovery. Sometimes it’s a new word. Sometimes it’s a surprise $@#*& word and it’s like where did she learn that? But 2s are a most precious time. You’ll need airbags traveling down the road with a teen (also precious but challenging). Enjoy the ride!!!

@DanZangrilli This was also the end of an innocent time. Two kids exceedingly happy not looking for publicity or even to be in the moment. And Maz happy to celebrate with them (after he touched home plate). Wonder too if the Mall Cop lost his job that day.

@JoshYohe_PGH I’ve been enjoying watching curling 🥌 In the mixed doubles the women seem equal to the men if not better (Italy). What advantages might men have over women? Stronger, faster, higher may not apply as this seems to me to be very precision oriented.

@gerrydulac Failed process to pit players against owners and coaches.

@AustinRBechtold @JoeStarkey1 @KDPomp 95%. If anyone listened long enough to hear City Limits they also heard Austin.
English

I asked @JoeStarkey1 this on the air the other day. Joe has given me so many nicknames: City Limits, Limits, The Limitless Wonder, Wonder Twin, Twin, City Sweeper, and there are probably more.
What percentage of our listening audience knows that my first name is Austin? @KDPomp

@dvesean At the playoff game we were treated to a disembodied Myron head drone show. Only in Pittsburgh. Hoom-hah!

@troybeck @PPGPaintsArena Just a thought and someone in line would have to confirm this. Verizon had an outage and some may have gone to their apps and found they weren’t working. Happened to me Monday night at Acrisure and took about 20 minutes to load. (Never happened at Heinz though)
English

10 minutes before puck drop and the arena line is still 50 deep.
Great shit, @PPGPaintsArena.
Amateur Ahr.

@JRown32 I was at Super Bowl XLIII yet still think this was Ben’s greatest play in his career. Although he was pretty good that night too.
