He's a good employee and an asset. He just thinks he's the main character in the movie and he values his happiness outside of work enough that everyone else sees it.
The big wakeup call is when someone hired 8 years after him becomes his superior.
He probably then leaves on his own and only realizes too late that he'll never really get into management.
