It's because they're Normies, and therefore prioritize Socializing over anything else. It couldn't have been abandoned after 2020, because COVID forced all normies to curb their IRL socializing, driving them into subcultural hobby burrows to do it instead, like an infestation.

Well maybe because games are comprised of a lot more than just the gameplay and often times are also a medium for storytelling and artwork which many different people can like 😕 This would make sense if we were still jiggling our joysticks making Mario jump over barrels

I think it's just pent up impatience from older fans.
Imagine not liking BOTW, then 5 years later they are like "Boom! A direct sequel!". Yeah thats 10 years of Zelda that you don't like, while fans tell you its the future of zelda. I kinda get it.
