@ThomasHochman Does the lawsuit address the ”significant quantities” part? As that is defined by IAEA as enough material for a bomb, and I would assume most reactors (including Last Energy’s) would fall under that.

The key legal argument is that the 1954 Atomic Energy Act only gives NRC authority over reactors that: a) Use nuclear material in quantities significant to national security OR b) operate in a way that affects public health and safety

Tätä ei kuitenkaan tunnuta haluttavan tunnustaa, kun instituutioille on kätevää käyttää mittaria jonka joku muu määrittää, ja he joilla on vaikutusvaltaa arviointiin voivat käyttää sitä huolehtimaan että omat julkaisukanavan ovat hyvin edustettuina. Näin kärjistäen.

Ja muistutus että jo JUFOn oman määritelmän mukaan luokitusta tulisi käyttää vain isojen organisaatioiden arviointiin, ei missään nimessä yksittäisten tutkijoiden tai julkaisujen! JUFO-arviot tehdään pienten ryhmien toimesta eikä monia aloja ole niissä edustettuna.

@Rami_Niemi Aika paljon myös todetaan että asiaa X kun on vaikeaa selvittää niin se jätetään sivuun. Sinänsä Lafferin käyrä nollalla ja sadalla prosentilla on triviaali, mutta enpä tuosta noin isoja johtopäätöksiä vielä huutelisi.

Usein kuulee että koko Lafferin käyrää ei ole edes olemassa. Nyt on kuitenkin kivasti plotattu se kummalla puolella kertymämaksimia ollaan. Jännä..

@AngelicaOung @Polybertarian That would just be needlessly complicated? I mean, Th is just one source of fertile nucleus, like U238. Then you get the breeding cycles, either Th-U or U-Pu, and be happy if those work. They have more similarities than differences in those cycles anyway.

Yo is this true? I’ve been reading up everything I could about the thorium molten salt demonstrator in the Gobi desert as one does and I find this Reddit post. Apparently, it’s really not a thorium reactor, it’s a reactor with thorium. As in, uranium is still what’s being burnt but they also have some thorium in the reactor mostly just hanging out. It’s like saying you’re going to get shitfaced on beer but it’s a vodka cocktail with some beer in it. What’s the point? Especially as the usage of thorium creates additional material science problems. Why are the Chinese bothering with it? Apparently if the 2MW TMSF-LF1 goes well they’ll build a 373MW version for 2029. I’m still super curious about it. But mostly because it’s molten salt.

@AngelicaOung @Polybertarian Even ”pure” thorium reactor uses uranium for fuel! (Th-232 captures neutron, decays via intermediate nucleu to U-233 which is the actual fuel. Any thorium cycle reactor also needs the initial fissile inventory, and that’s either U235, Pu239 or U233 from earlier Th cycle)

@VTulkki @Tpsmyth01 @KCel65 @energybants You can obtain the same capacity factor with longer fuel cycles and longer outages during refueling & maintenance. I’m not saying it’s completely useless, but definitely not worth the extra complications of the EPR.
