🌧️⚠️Models over the past few days have trended towards the potential for another major flooding event over the next week or two as 1-2 strong atmospheric rivers (AR) flow into the region. The first AR will arrive on Tuesday/Wednesday which looks to be a colder system, at first, bringing a snowstorm to the mountains. But then warmer air is forecast to flow over the region later on Wednesday, resulting in snow levels rising well beyond 5,000ft... On Thursday, the snow levels for the northern and central WA Cascades look to drop back below 5,000ft as the AR shifts south a bit. However, the southern WA and northern OR Cascades look to be on the warm side with rain for most of the higher elevations. This first AR looks to end by Saturday... Then, another AR will arrive on Sunday, which for me personally, looks to be the most impactful. This one looks to come in at the PNW at a more SW to NE angle as a ridge of high pressure builds over the Southwest US. This will cause this one to be warmer than the first and having a more classic, impactful AR orientation. This system is around 7-9 days out so there is still quite a bit of model disagreement we need to work out over the coming week... Summary: A couple strong ARs are forecast over the next 1-2 weeks as cold air over the Gulf of Alaska collides with warm, subtropical air from Hawaii. So, you can call these Pineapple Expresses if you want! 🍍 The first one arrives mid-week with heavy snow in the mountains to start out before a period of warmer air from the 2nd half of Wed. through early Thur. leads to mostly rain. This AR will shift around from northern Oregon through Washington until Saturday. The 2nd, likely most impactful AR, will arrive on Sunday through the week after next... Below are a few models showing total precipitation expected over the next 9-11 days. The NBM, which is an average of many different models, shows up to 1 to 1.5 feet in the mountains (less up in BC) with 3-6" in the lowlands from western Oregon all the way up through SW BC. The 3rd image is of the GEM (Canadian model), which was one of the best models at predicting the maximum rainfall totals in December that led to historic floods. It has been showing upwards of 2-3 FEET of precipitation over the next 10-days in the mountains, which is basically the worst-case scenario... The NW River Forecast Center is already showing at least one river getting close to record levels. NWRFC: "The Skokomish River will cause major, near record flooding throughout the Skokomish Valley. Deep and swift flood waters will inundate residential areas, many roads including SR 106, and much of the farmland. Flooding will occur all along the river including headwaters, tributaries, and other streams within and near the Skokomish River Basin." See the 4th image below for the estimated timeline for the Skokomish River flooding. If model trends hold, I expect more forecasts to sound like this for other rivers across the region.

Just for fun, let's take a look at this afternoon's GFS model run. It brings a powerful storm in 9-11 days that brings a snowstorm, windstorm, AND a strong atmospheric river to the PNW. It drops over a foot of snow on Seattle before rapidly changing as strong winds (50-70mph) move warm air over the region leading to heavy rain and melting. I am curious to know, IF something like this were to happen, would you guys want it, or not? You can answer by voting in the poll below 👇 P.S. An active weather pattern looks to start up here soon, which I will have more posts about soon, but a solution like what the GFS is showing is VERY unlikely.
