🌍🔬 Our new paper is out — revealing the global mechanisms that shape the elemental composition of organisms! doi.org/10.1038/s41467… In this study, we drew on the StoichLife database, which now includes more than 28,000 measurements of elemental composition — including nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations — across 5,443 species from 1,390 locations worldwide. Our findings show that nutrient availability, especially nitrogen deposition, is the strongest driver of variation in organismal stoichiometry — far more influential than temperature, precipitation, or solar radiation. This challenges long-standing assumptions in global ecology, which have traditionally attributed most broad-scale stoichiometric patterns to climate and latitude-related factors. The study also reveals that latitudinal gradients in stoichiometry — such as increasing phosphorus content in plants at higher latitudes — arise mainly from shifts in species composition, rather than from within-species physiological changes. In other words, the chemical makeup of ecosystems changes predominantly because the species that build those ecosystems change. This work marks an important step towards understanding how anthropogenic eutrophication influences ecosystem functioning and the global cycling of matter. 🔗 The research was conducted by the sBiomaps working group: idiv.de/research/sdiv/… @agonzalezLAB @idiv @stan_harpole @EugeniaZandona @hhillebr1
