The life of newbie farmers! Food For Thought It was my first year in commercial broiler production! & I wanted to make as much money as possible and exactly like what I had seen being done by others! With so much energy I would read books, research online take courses and listening to the gurus! Making money with broilers is easy' they'd say... Screenshots and photos 📸 of others doing very well were being shared! And luckily for me they said you can do it, we will guide you😊 So I did as per instruction, got the day old chicks but then, I ran into the wall🥹 Within the first day 100 chicks died, some were drowning 😢 But don't get me wrong here, I wasn't expecting 0% mortality, or 100% uniformity ( just yet), but I wasn't expecting absolutely nothing either! If I'm to be honest, I was literally embarrassed 😰 All this information wasn't published anywhere, I didn't want the shame 😕 I was following what I had researched, and what the gurus were doing, but instead of dollars flying into my bank account, it was more bills flying out ! It wasn't inspiring anymore, infact I was beginning to lose hope! Then I realised something! The people teaching me how to get the results I wanted *only make money by SELLING HOW TO GET RESULTS🤯* Ultimately I stopped a lot of things, I stopped listening to a lot of individuals, I worked out key performance parameters I needed, gathered around my team for an in-house training at Irvines and developed our own standards of operating procedures, have a monitoring & evaluation system which allowed us to track progress Then soon after we did the same for the other departments of our farm from the beef, value chain to the entire farm I gathered our top guys and developed a land use and management plan with all the key performance parameters, that were not going to be altered in any way! We stopped following every trick being done elsewhere! 7 years later, I now do 280 000 birds at less than 3% mortality, never seen before Feed Conversion Efficiency and more than 90% uniformity! With the system and process in place to get better results, any person within our team can do everything at their own! That's the power of land use and management planning! Right now our other farmers we work with are getting the same results!, we develop their land use and management planning from their key pressing needs! No more painful trial and errors! InFact Between 2019 & 2022, in Zimbabwe, 868 900 farmers & other investors lost a massive chunk of their investments from this one little mistake. One prominent farmer from Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union who has been farming for more than 37 years referred to it as.. "the most difficult trap to notice & a systematic error of economic importance" 👉even though no one talks about it". It's the Shiny Object Syndrome! In 2014 when I started with 10 200 broilers at the farm, we had a mortality of 18% meaning 1 836 were lost, contrary to the experts benchmark of 5% at most! I was following a lot of shiny objects and in this case when I say shiny objects it's not only about projects but also systems and processes! Anyone would come with suggestions, do this instead! and the following day another advise 🤯 I don’t wish such things to happen to you again dear farmer!
