Turns out it’s not decoration, but the pattern is actually a metallic mesh that helps with: - Electromagnetic shielding to keep onboard systems stable - Even window heating to prevent fogging and icing

I'm on a DB train on my way to the @embedded_world, and whenever I'm in one of these I notice drop in cell signal levels. Then I noticed the faint hexagonal mesh inside the train windows. 🧵

In those years, manufacturers kept experimenting with mechanical camera designs, and I have always felt that was the true golden age of smartphones. To achieve a complete, pure display without any cutouts, every brand came up with its own solution. The approaches were different, yet all full of imagination. Back then, every phone had its own character. Later, punch hole displays became the mainstream. Everything suddenly became simpler, and also more monotonous. The screen problem was quickly “solved,” but the joy of exploration gradually faded away. I still deeply miss that era defined by mechanical structures and a strong sense of engineering romance.
