I had the same experience— as a kid I realize now I just learned how to push numbers around on a page; after teaching elementary math I have a fundamentally different (and to me, better) understanding of how numbers work. Kids shouldn’t have to wait.

@csdewitt Loved this. Man, thanks for sharing. It’s rare to get stories as vivid as these from professional sports — especially at the minor league level.

In 2017, I lived with 6 other guys in a 2-bedroom apt. People used to say: • "How can you live like this?" • "I could never do that" • "You're wasting your time" What's interesting is that it never felt that crazy to us. The reason why is because a worthy aspiration romanticizes dirty work. • Long bus rides • Nearly inedible food • $12k annual salaries These soon became badges of honor. We were knights on a noble quest. And that's the point: Choose a dream worthy enough to justify the dirty work. Every worthy dream requires dirty work. And if the dream isn't strong enough to justify the dirty work, pick another dream. It's difficult to navigate turbulent waters when you're counting the seconds. But if there's one thing to remember, it's this: Never, ever let dirty work discourage you from pursuing something meaningful.
