Madam Neumann, I know from your involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan that you genuinely care about this region. Please, Iran is not Iraq or Afghanistan. Don’t get pulled into a simplistic ethnic or tribal narrative promoted by so-called opposition figures. People in Kurdistan, Balochistan, and Arab regions do not seek ethnic rule. They seek equal citizenship rights. Yet Europe, through an orientalist and reductionist lens, often falls into the trap of such narratives because they mirror preconceived images shaped by Iraq and Afghanistan, and because they fit a more comfortable way of understanding the region. Many of the ethnic opposition leaders are primarily seeking a share of power. Just as the Islamic Republic does not represent us, neither do these parties represent the Kurds, Baloch, or Arabs of Iran. A coalition transitional government is not, in itself, the solution. A transitional government must have one clear objective: to prepare ground to deliver democratic commitments. It should not become a system where power-sharing is treated as the end goal. We have already seen how this logic failed in both Iraq and Afghanistan. When external actors insisted that every faction must get a share of power, the result was decades of permanent “transition.” Iraq is still struggling with the legacy of that approach, and Kabul ultimately fell in part because of how the transitional government was designed and imposed by international actors. The obsession with inclusion at any cost often ended up freezing instability rather than resolving it. Reza Pahlavi is currently the only figure with broad public trust and no ties to the Iranian regime. I saw you mentioned that you invited him and he did not respond. He has to protect the trust the Iranian people have placed in him. From the perspective of many Iranians, several of the opposition figures invited alongside him are not genuine opposition but regime-linked lobbies. Many opposition groups function, in practice, as channels of influence for the Iranian regime. In authoritarian systems, influence does not always come from open lobbying; it often comes from networks that present themselves as opposition while ensuring that criticism never becomes truly threatening to the system they claim to oppose. It would be more meaningful to engage with Reza Pahlavi directly. Europe should be able to distinguish between someone with tens of millions of supporters and figures most Iranians have never seen or heard of, or are considered the regime hidden lobbies.
