Once a platform, bold and free, X was a place for you and me But now it bends to one man’s hand, A billionaire’s toxic brand Trust has waned, Discourse twisted, truth constrained I will go to where the sky is blue 🦋 And hope journalists will, too 👉 bsky.app/profile/hneuma…

.@SteliosKoul was infected with Pegasus while investigating spyware abuse in this Parliament. Three years after Parliament proposed solutions to spyware abuse, it’s time for Member States to act under the Irish Council presidency #Spyware

The conclusion is clear: we are at best maintaining #dependencies and spending lots of money for little reward. #MemberStates must spend together, European and future-oriented—or we miss our goals and waste tons of public money in the process. (5/5)

Member State defence R&D spending reached €17 billion in 2025 and is projected to rise to €20 billion in 2026. R&D represented just 4.0% of total defence expenditure, only marginally above the 3.9% recorded in 2024. (4/5)

Authoritarian regimes exploit loopholes in our own systems to target critics abroad, for example through passport denials, de-banking or intimidation through asylum translation services. In @EP_HumanRights, I called on the EU to #StopTransnationalRepression

The Commission invited the #Taliban to Brussels for deportation talks. Their push for access to Afghan consulates could put those who fled their repression at risk. I called on Ireland’s Minister @ThomasByrneTD for the @EUCouncil presidency to close these loopholes.

There is no such thing as technical engagement with Taliban. It is political normalisation without accountability. @EU_Commission must explain ➡️ who is being returned ➡️ how Afghans in Europe will be protected from #TransnationalRepression ➡️ what Taliban expect in return 5/5

For Afghans who fled #Taliban, this is not an abstract diplomatic question. Imagine having to register your child's birth, renew your passport or obtain official documents through Taliban officials in #Berlin, #Brussels or #Barcelona. 4/5

#Taliban in #Brussels. A meeting that should never have happened. Today Commissioner @MagnusBrunner debriefed the LIBE Committee on last month's meeting with Taliban-appointed representatives. The more we heard, the more questions emerged. 1/5

And there is another contradiction. #Taliban made clear that returns require functioning consular services. So is the @EU_Commission now paving the way for Taliban officials to take over Afghan consular services across Europe? That would go far beyond facilitating returns. 3/5

Iran suspected of using advertising data to track Americans amid strikes. Ad-blockers can be a life or death matter. The commercial location data industry (ad tracking, network tracking, etc.) is a privacy nightmare. If Iran can get it, it's a national security emergency for every government. Ads were an annoyance. Now they're potential kill chain input. And a thousand other harms. Industry lobbyists make sure that the data keeps flowing. While the companies make sure you have no idea what's happening. It is morally right to block ads. Wild that, for years, US has been warned that this is an issue by Senator @RonWyden and the loophole remains open. (Good to see @RepPatHarrigan leaning in here & proposing legislation) It is especially wild to me that Americans are massively less protected from the commercial tracking industry than most developed countries' citizens. Some would argue even Chinese citizens get better protections (though not from their gov!). It's a multi-faceted mess but in my mind, the solutions aren't. Some examples: Governments ✅No government device should get ads & tracking. They should be blocked at the gateway. ✅An ad/tracking/broker business that enables national security harms should fear prosecution & sanction Lawmakers ✅ Make the laws & give the authorities to shut this s*itshow down before it gets worse. Phone networks ✅ Block tracking attempts, warn users & brief governments Platforms ✅ Protect your users & don't be complicit when third parties use your tools to track them. ✅ Sue the worst abusers. Phone Manufacturers ✅ Kill in-app advertising-IDs Enterprise ✅ Ad block everywhere, block any app that integrates tracking. Everybody ✅ It's OK to block ads. Don't settle for this. Discussing the foreign policy priorities of the incoming Irish @EUCouncil presidency with @HMcEntee. For me it is crucial to raise awareness of the situation of people in Iran and that our sanctions on the Iranian regime for its human rights violations stay in place.
