BREAKING: Google is planning to release 32 million mosquitoes across Florida and California. The company has asked the EPA for permission to proceed, with the public given until June 5 to respond. The mosquitoes are infected with Wolbachia bacteria, which stops them from reproducing and slowly collapses the wild population from within. Google's previous Debug Project trial in California's Central Valley nearly eliminated mosquitoes from three test sites entirely. A separate trial in Singapore cut dengue cases by 70% within 12 months. Google has now released over 1 billion mosquitoes across four continents. This new proposal is the largest deployment in US history.

This has quietly been a miracle month in medicine.
In the last 5 weeks we’ve got news on:
- retatrutide, the triple agonist GLP-1 from Lilly, basically melting fat and body-wide inflammation at record levels
- RevMed’s new pancreatic cancer drug showing unprecedented abilities to extend life
- small trial of a one-and-done PCSK9 gene editing therapy for slashing LDL cholesterol
- Mayo’s AI-assisted radiology showing vastly improved cancer detection
- this new therapy for metastatic solid tumors
This stuff is at varying levels of evidence. Retatrutide is ~100% on its way, other stuff needs more clinical trial data. But put it together and we’re maybe on the verge of majorly reducing the mortality of heart disease and cancer, the two leading causes of death in America.

This is actually insane. 97% of people taking the standard of care for metastatic solid tumor got worse by seven years. But with lorlatinib, that number was only 45% in the same time! This is an ENORMOUS jump in the quality of cancer care.

Woke 1.0 was neither a failure nor someone's conspiracy plot - it was a pure media effect.
As institutions rushed into digital, they found the first digital demographics there, mostly young, urban, educated progressives, and aligned with them.
The first users of any new medium impose their values on the rest of society, always. Woke 1.0 was an effect of the Digital Rush.

@deetvleet @visakanv @CaliTenDay You're still evaluating it as if it's supposed to provide an accurate comparison. I don't think it is. Part of the reason we don't look like the models do is that we're not striking the pose, not in professional lighting, not wearing makeup, not in a tailored version, etc.

@hunterlanier @techhsiren Oh man, we had a place that delivered margaritas for a while. It was kind of fantastic. And then I quit drinking because it was wrecking my anxiety levels... but for a few months there it was a nice treat! Had to find now where we could.

@techhsiren The local Mexican restaurant did “to go margaritas” and it was just a bottle of tequila with a styrofoam cup of lime juice 🤌
We drank that and a shit ton of this target margarita wine. We were just kind of drinking out of boredom now that you mention it

guys was it normal to have a mild drinking problem during the pandemic? like i didn't realize this was weird til after lockdown ended but i was buying like a litre of wine and drinking it in 2 days pretty regularly

@rcwhiteley @JacksonKernion They did exactly the opposite. They throttled the CPU to keep old phones from just shutting off when power draw spiked. They did get in trouble for not communicating it and publicly apologized.
iPhones get updates for longer, are kept longer, retain resale value longer.

@JacksonKernion Hey, there's proof that anthropic reduced the reasoning steps of their models. And apple was found to be using planned obsolescence to reduce the battery life of their phones so people would upgrade.

Chapter Co-Founder and CEO @CobiBGantz outlines a shift his team recently noticed: "Anthropic has kind of taken a page out of the Apple playbook, where they have...decreased the quality of the prior models right before they launched the new model, so that the new model feels better."

@AI_WarriorNQ @JacksonKernion Also, people consistently keep iPhone longer than other brands. iPhones retain resale value longer, and Apple consistently supports devices with security updates longer than other manufacturers. None of that is consistent with them purposefully degrading old hardware.

The YouTube thumbnail incentives seem to be perfectly aligned with making you look like an absolute crank. This seems bad. It seems even worse for the future of media literacy.

A cool thing about replying to an employee at a frontier lab is that you can be fairly certain your opinion will actually get considered because their LLM will just scoop everything up and think about it.

@thsottiaux I pretty much always use Claude and ChatGPT in parallel and fall into patterns based on my own feel for what each does better. I shake that up if I see people talking on Twitter about a new model being better/more efficient at some specific thing. Benchmarks mean nothing to me.
