Ramaphosa's speech on national television tonight did not bring much in the way of new announcements, but it did showcase the importance of BRICS to the country. It marked an important moment for South Africa to clarify some of its positions, particularly in relation to Africa. Additionally, it was a rare opportunity that saw the president explaining to South Africans the key national foreign policy principles and beliefs. Unsurprisingly, much of Ramaphosa's focus has been on identifying areas that highlight the relevance of BRICS. He spoke about achievements by the bloc and new agreements that are set to be signed this week, especially with China. He touched on the AfCFTA and the importance of ensuring stronger complementarity. Quite a bit of focus was given to SA's relations with the West, speaking specifically about South African relations with the US and EU. He confirmed that AGOA Summit will indeed happen in South Africa this year, as well as a South Africa-EU Summit too. Interesting to see a Summit done by an African country with Europe, reversing the order we are so familiar with. It was an important point for further clarification of South Africa's international stance, including an explanation of what non-alignment means for the country. This confirms what many of us have been saying for some time, that non-alignment is not synonymous with neutrality. The speech offered some useful perspectives on strategic partnerships, making it one of Ramaphosa's most tangible foreign policy addresses in quite a while. It was also vital to note some of the areas in which African leaders are pushing in the context of Ukraine, focusing particularly on issues related to children, war prisoners, and access to grains from the Black Sea. I was pleasantly surprised by the substance and direction of the speech, adding a refreshing layer of clarity and intention to South Africa's foreign policy landscape. We don't see these moments often.

@Mo_Magoda @MaxduPreez Want to make a point? Avoid insults, childish remarks. We are here to build a better world. We have different view points and can get it across by being decent. Insults and snide remarks actually show how unhappy you are. I am sorry for you.

As a South African, I'm keen on #BRICS2023. But as a journalist, I loudly protest against Iqbal Surve speaking on behalf of media at the summit. He is a blight on the South African media landscape. He destroyed the reputation and viability of once proud newspapers in his group

Middelburg flying squad were on patrol on the N12 direction Johannesburg: They spotted a suspicious grey BMW with two occupants. The car was hijacked. Police found two AK47s on the back seat. Nine magazines full of AK47 ammunition also seized. The suspects were allegedly en-route to JHB to carry out a revenge murder.
