There is an aggressor: Russia. There is a victim: Ukraine. We were right to help Ukraine and sanction Russia three years ago—and to keep doing so. By “we,” I mean the Americans, the Europeans, the Canadians, the Japanese, and many others. Thank you to all who have helped and continue to do so. And respect to those who have been fighting since the beginning—because they are fighting for their dignity, their independence, their children, and the security of Europe.

If @PM_ViktorOrban really blocks European sanctions at a key moment for the war, it’ll be absolutely clear that in this big game for the security and future of Europe, he is playing in Putin’s team, not in ours. With all the consequences of this fact.

Russia was forced to attack Ukraine because Ukrainians wanted to join NATO? NATO promised it would not expand to the east but later broke this promise? It will take me less than five minutes to prove with facts that both statements are false.

Initial thoughts about the disgusting movie being shown at @TIFF_NET "Russians at War" (#5 and #6 especially). 1. It’s a movie, not a documentary. Multiple camera angles and positions, i.e. on the tank scenes, everyone is wearing a mic, there are carefully chosen characters, plots, editorialized voiceovers and subtext on the screen. When someone in the theatre got up to protest the film, a fellow viewer yelled at him to shut up; because they’re “trying to watch a movie”. It was like I was sitting with a bunch of voyeurs. 2. If you didn’t’ know anything about the war, you’d think Ukraine is the bad guy. The viewers are led on a journey to understand that the Russians know their side isn’t virtuous; but there’s nothing to even suggest that Ukraine is the innocent party. Quotes suggesting this is about NATO expansion, or Ukrainian aggression go un-challenged and nothing is refuted with a voiceover or subtitle. 3. There is no mention of any of the atrocities committed by Russians against Ukrainians. In fact, viewers are led to believe none have happened. 4. Terms like “the front”, and “the Luhansk People’s Republic” are used in place of Ukraine – intentionally. 5. There is no way, no way, no way the Kremlin didn’t know and approve the making of this film. The film maker had unfettered access – embedded herself with the unit; admits “command” knows she’s there, was given a military uniform, rigged cameras onto military equipment, was able to travel from within Ukraine’s borders, back to Moscow, and back to “the front”. She filmed at the military hospital; again with a camera set up, audio, lighting etc. From someone who was sanctioned personally by Russia for writing an op-ed in a Canadian newspaper – I can tell you, the Kremlin knows every move against them. The idea that she was covert is laughable if it wasn’t being bought hook, line and sinker from the Canadian arts elite. 6. If Russia approved this movie – ask yourself why? The goal of this movie (and it’s very good at it), is to create anti-war and “peace” activists in the West who oppose this war. TIFF itself said as much today. The problem is that means activism against supplying Ukraine with the weapons and funds it needs to win this war. Peace isn’t victory. Peace is what Russia wants—stalemate. 7. TIFF officials introduced the filmmaker as having worked at the NY Times, Washington Post and CBC. No mention of the 7 years at RT (Russian State television network). 8. At the end of the movie, we're supposed to feel sorry for a Russian who died, leaving three children. All I thought was the father in Lviv last week who buried his three daughters and wife, murdered by Russians at War. I’ll write more later, I’m still shaking with anger. Mad at Canadian institutions for funding this, mad at Canadian media who being so blind to the overt propaganda, mad at @TIFF_NET for whitewashing this atrocious war in the name of art and humanizing the aggressors. When a "human" rapes a woman, do we try to humanize him? Or do we accept he's the bad guy. Even if he's funny, even if he's a father, even if he hasn't been paid in a month.

*Statement by the Council of the Free Russia Forum on Events in the Kursk region* Observing the events that have unfolded in recent days in the Kursk region, we feel it necessary to emphasize the following: As we have repeatedly stated, the war unleashed by Putin against Ukraine is criminal. Now this war is returning to Russia, which is quite natural. As the saying goes, “he who sows the wind will reap the storm." All the victims and destruction caused by this war, including on the territory of the Russian Federation, are a direct consequence of Putin's criminal policy. For Ukraine, this war is a defensive and just war. Ukrainians are fighting for their freedom and independence, for the right to exist as a state and a nation. They have the right to defend themselves as they see fit, while of course observing the laws and customs of war. The transfer of hostilities to the territory of the aggressor is their legal right. We welcome the breakthrough by the Ukrainian armed forces in the Kursk region, which demonstrates to us that the course of the war is by no means a foregone conclusion. The local successes of Putin's invaders in Ukraine turned out to be only an isolated episode. Now the initiative has passed to the Ukrainians, which gives us hope that a Ukrainian victory in this war is not only possible, but quite probable. Especially impressive is the fact that the current success of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) has been achieved with very limited supplies of weapons from Western countries and with an acute shortage of manpower. The breakthrough of the AFU into the Kursk region once again convinces us that fighting for a righteous cause is the strongest of motivations, and can have a greater impact on the course of military operations than weapons and supply of soldiers. Recent events in the Kursk region offer the best response to skeptics who talk about the need for negotiations and the impossibility of reaching the 1991 borders. The course of the war is unpredictable, and its end result may turn out to be quite different from what was imagined. Unfortunately, no combat operation is without casualties. We express our condolences to the families and loved ones of the civilians who were killed as a result of the fighting in Kursk region. At the same time, we draw their attention to the fact that the real culprit behind the deaths of these people (as well as all victims of the war) is the Russian dictator who unleashed this war and continues to wage it to this day—Vladimir Putin. We also recall that we have consistently supported Ukraine in this war since its beginning. We see the AFU as our natural allies in the fight against Putin's tyranny. This is our fundamental difference from other sections of the exiled Russian diaspora, which have so far taken an insufficiently clear position on this war. We call on them to come to their senses and begin to provide effective support to those who are now confronting Putin's aggression on the battlefield: the Ukrainian armed forces and Russian volunteers. Our slogan—"Victory to Ukraine, freedom to Russia!"– takes on new meaning when we see the AFU marching through Russian territory, effectively liberating it from Putinism. Whatever the final outcome of this operation, one thing has become clear: Putin's regime is not as strong as it seems. It can be crushed by the force of arms both in Ukraine and in Russia itself.
