- xai is indeed struggling heavily and continues to bleed remaining talent. why would anyone join xai when cursor people are going to clean house?
- cursor isn't that appealing, but a combination of some incredibly high offers and "generous" terms lead some to take the risk.

$$$ AI researchers switching labs recently— * xAI cleaned house and having a hard time refilling talent. Shifted to hiring more startup / engineer grinder types vs researchers. Narrowed focus to code. * Cursor having talent trouble + identity crisis: undercapitalized financially relative to team talent level. * Project Prometheus (Bezos) quietly snapping up talent. Many key hires recently. Potential to be major player. * Anthropic remains most desirable, even more than last 6mo, few leave. Difficult to poach from with upcoming IPO. Only hiring staff or above and stopped hiring even senior. * TBD (Meta) also keeps snapping up top talent quietly. MSL seen as significantly less desirable. * Thinking Machines has somewhat stabilized after departures earlier this year. Star studded still but not an auto-pick for talent newly on market. * OAI churning as always, both from normal burnout bleed and latest reshuffle axing non-core divisions. * Not super sure what’s going on with GDM wrt talent. Perpetually #3 spot on model ranking. Overall, talent flow is net flowing out of undercapitalized neolabs to highly capitalized neolabs or Anthropic.

How bad is SF for single straight men? It's so bad that a friend is thinking of turning down an OpenAI offer so he won't have to move there. SF won't achieve its potential if it can't figure out how to provide a fun singles scene for the men who make the tech innovation possible

@volmaxxer To get the scores you gave to go through ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, someone in a lab selects a sperm to inject into the egg, the embryo is cultured, biopsied frozen, you have to have it implanted. It’s not a free upgrade.

there’s a joke somewhere in the five hours it takes for fun narrative to spin - the linkedin writing that i made sure was lower case so it feels “human” is being juxtaposed with my literary fiction.

@CoffeeandIrony pangram has a very low rate of calling non-AI written texts "AI". id love to see the examples where you got the 50% from.

how accurate is Pangram though? from everything I've seen, their accuracy has been reported to be only about 50% (ie people have put in texts that existed before AI, or that they just wrote, and it gets labeled as AI). I think a good human editor with AI knowledge probably has a better shot of identifying AI. Off to read these other two though

Well, this is a first: a ChatGPT-generated story won a prestigious literary prize (The Commonwealth Prize). "Not X, not Y, but Z" sentences everywhere, the "hums" trope, and plenty of other obvious markers of AI writing. A major milestone for AI, at any rate... @GrantaMag
