@zeChedli It also doesn’t have the jarring problem of not being filmed in the appropriate language.

Beaucoup parlent de Tchernobyl comme étant la meilleure mini série de HBO mais je vous en conjure, allez regarder The Night Of. Ça n’a rien à voir je précise, mais elle m’a tellement plus marqué !

The Great Prayer Experiment claims that prayer "doesn't work." Well, when I say I'm praying for you, and you say you are praying for me, we are expressing concern for each other. I'm pretty sure that works.

What’s the best example of a polity in which “conservative liberalism” has been able to resist the encroachment and eventual dominance of left-liberalism (i.e. progressivism)? Is there one?

Began reading this and I feel like it will be very good. Wootton covers the early modern psychological transformation that gave rise to instrumental reason and how it shaped the Enlightenment. "The transition from Aristotle to Adam Smith." 1/2

@jasonachristian More in line with Orwell to speak of agreement or disagreement rather than correct or incorrect in politics.

Say what you will about Orwell's politics, but he was 100% correct about the use of stock phrases degrading our ability to write and think clearly (e.g. "the call is coming from inside the house"). Add to that AI, and we have only begun to see the pervasive cognitive decline.

@MattPolProf If intellectual curiosity is at odds with anything it is partisanship as such. This isn’t necessarily a critique but seems like more of a truism.

I dont no. There are a few good right wing critics of the left Ive singled out. Mansfield's latest book is a good example. Scruton's Fools, Frauds and Firebrands is pretty good. But by and large the standards or engagement are low, and that thread is an example of just that...
Merlin@Merlin67684223

@MattPolProf I think it tells us a lot about the individual who wrote the article, not people on the right as a whole. Or do you seriously suppose that intellectual curiosity is a creature of only those on the left?

We're living through a crisis of knowledge and trust in institutions. This new piece argues that a common diagnosis--we're overdoing politics--is wrong. The real problem is the lack of avenues for meaningful political activity. Link in the reply.

Weber gave the right explanation. Its seldom the case that the well off are just content with their affluence. They want to believe it was earned and deserved, leading them to mysticism. You see popular conservatives like D'Souza and Shapiro articulate this need all the time 👇

Has anyone written about how the American right embraced meritocracy? It went from being a satirical concept, and rejected by Hayek and Sowell, to supposedly the antidote to DEI and affirmative action. But the original vulnerabilities of meritocracy were never addressed.
