My wife is never going to be able to look at me the same way again. She just learned I’m related to someone involved in the production of the Bachelor.

One thing the prof who taught this course did that I always thought I’d want to emulate if I ever got to teach a graduate seminar was tell us she hoped we’d teach these texts to our own students one day and provide us with notes and suggested readings to make that easier for us
Jonathan Fine@jonathanbfine

On the first day of one of my grad seminars, a student noticed that the class on Augustine’s City of God didn’t list any page numbers. The professor looked at us like she couldn’t comprehend why that was a problem.

@JonoMarkley I don’t teach graduate seminars, but when graduate students complain about the amount of reading they have to do I just make sure to nod my head understandingly and not mention how much more used to be assigned not that long ago

@jonathanbfine Now I wrestle with the choice between assigning a true grad level reading list that won't be read (or understood) or assigning a much lighter load.... that also won't be read, but which at least allows more discussion time in class.

Dialectical Zach-Zack Loeffler@thezachloeffler

I haven’t taught a grad seminar in a long time—do people still assign this much reading and a 20-page seminar paper? I don’t really know how I ever read 500 pages a week and wrote three or four 20-page papers at the end of the quarter in a few days.

Pretty sure that if my dad had picked me up from school, people would have assumed my mom had died. I like seeing both moms and dads at pick up now that millennials are parents.

@No5mallf3at we talked about parts that were most relevant to the Augustinian moment in early 20th century Germany, so there were quite specific points she wanted to discuss

@jonathanbfine If you were reading fast at 2-3 hours a day I think you could do it in a week. But again like, what on earth would you retain. How much of it did you guys cover in the seminar?

@jonathanbfine Most of it isn’t the most complicated writing ever to read and understand. I’d guess if you’re really going for it you can finish it in a week, but like, what’s the point? Idk.

@jonathanbfine How long was the seminar? City of God is massive and it would take multiple semesters to cover all of it, it’s so disjointed in its different discussions.

@jonathanbfine A good friend had a meeting with Gayatri to interview for her grad class on Marx, in which she referred to herself throughout the meeting in the third person, ultimately telling him to "go to NYU and take Stevenss's class on Marx and return next year to take Spivak's class."

I once took a seminar with Étienne Balibar where he didn’t assign any reading until the seventh week of class. The class lasted ten weeks.
