Here’s what basically been going on: Export manufacturing jobs, destroy entire regions. Financialize the economy. Import the 3rd world to pick the crops and do the dirty work. Eliminate entry level work. Radically expand government by giving people solid incomes to basically do nothing. This gives you a core of connected, moderately educated people dependent upon maintaining the status quo. Raise taxes on the productive and independently wealthy to make sure no wealth is accumulated. The entire system runs in a cycle of depleting the wealth from the country, demoralizing people, eliminating opportunities. This reduces everyone to a paycheck by paycheck existence where they are struggling too hard to survive to pay attention to what is going on around them. Degrade public places and any institutions that allow for social connection and build enduring relationships. Stack homeless camps around strategically to scare the bejeezus out of everyone so they see very clearly, everyday, just how bad things could get. It’s a downward spiral, everyone locked in. With government employees and welfare recipients (and the businesses that feed off of them, like Walmart) the most empowered and motivated to keep the wheels churning.
