Digitalization with low government capacity may bring more problems than it solves. The digital ID is another unnecessary project that should not go ahead. See my old blog post jestforkicks.blogspot.com/2016/07/the-ne…
Samisa Abeysinghe@SamisaA

The recent USD 2.5 million heist from the Sri Lankan Treasury is a national embarrassment. It's not just a technical glitch. It is a catastrophic failure of basic security protocol at the highest level of government. I think it's clear that the External Resources Department (ERD) was caught sleeping. Hackers intercepted emails between the Treasury and Australian creditors to divert debt repayments. This is Business Email Compromise (BEC) 101, yet our "experts" let it happen with millions of taxpayer dollars on the line. The Illusion of Security I find it pathetic that we are pushing for a "cash-lite" economy while our own Treasury can't even secure a Gmail-level communication chain. If hackers can sit in the middle of a sovereign debt repayment, they are likely sitting in every other ministry too. The government keeps blaming "misinformation," but the only fact that matters is that the money is gone. This wasn't a sophisticated "realmhacking" operation. It was a failure of human oversight and outdated infrastructure. The Cost of Incompetence I believe this breach erodes what little international trust we have left after debt restructuring. Creditors will now question if our digital systems are even fit for purpose. Digital transformation without security transformation is just an invitation for theft. We need more than a CID investigation; we need a complete purge of legacy systems and the incompetent protocols that allow "email interception" to become a national crisis.

@yasmuhammedh @AzzamAmeen Incompetent government officials and digitalization is a bad combination. I was opposed to the Public Debt Management Office because skills were not available.

Sri Lanka’s Finance Ministry has confirmed hackers breached the External Resources Department system and stole funds linked to a foreign currency payment, after earlier opposition claims that USD 2.5 million in Treasury money had been stolen.

UK Jewish MP: "Israel acting like Nazis in Gaza" "Israel was born out of Jewish Terrorism - Tzipi Livni's Father was a Terrorist" Astonishing claims in the House of Parliament. SIR Gerald Kaufman, the veteran Labour MP, compared the actions of Israeli troops in Gaza to the Nazis who forced his family to flee Poland. During a Commons debate on the fighting in Gaza, he urged the government to impose an arms embargo on Israel. Sir Gerald, who was brought up as an orthodox Jew and Zionist, said: "My grandmother was ill in bed when the Nazis came to her home town a German soldier shot her dead in her bed. "My grandmother did not die to provide cover for Israeli soldiers murdering Palestinian grandmothers in Gaza. The present Israeli government ruthlessly and cynically exploits the continuing guilt from gentiles over the slaughter of Jews in the Holocaust as justification for their murder of Palestinians." He said the claim that many of the Palestinian victims were militants "was the reply of the Nazi" and added: "I suppose the Jews fighting for their lives in the Warsaw ghetto could have been dismissed as militants." He accused the Israeli government of seeking "conquest" and added: "They are not simply war criminals, they are fools." This was in 2009 when the truth could still be spoken in the UK Parliament

The restrictor remained in use until 1943, when the full pressure carburetor finally arrived. It had kept British pilots alive for two years in the middle of the war they couldn't afford to lose. After the war she worked on the Blue Streak missile. She studied what wet runways do to braking distances. She helped design a bobsled for the RAF Olympic team. In 1967 she solved overheating problems on an Eagle Mk1 Formula 1 car. She never received a top promotion at the RAE. Such positions, she was told, were for men. She received an OBE in 1949. The citation said "services to aviation." It did not mention the washer. She retired from the RAE in 1969. She kept racing motorcycles and sports cars. She modified and tuned both in her home workshop until she couldn't anymore. She died on November 18, 1990. She was 81. The Battle of Britain is one of the most documented events in British military history. Hundreds of books. Dozens of films. Memoirs by the pilots who flew in it. Almost none of them mention the carburetor problem. Almost none of them mention her. The pilots who benefited most never knew her name. They just knew that when they pushed the nose down, the engine kept running.

I predicted that one day I'd be speaking with/about Jewish Israeli victims of Apartheid. In the past week alone, I’ve been on call with 🇮🇱lawyers, MPs, activists, journalists - all facing consequences for standing against the genocide. No one is free until everyone is free.

In light of all the attacks against me, the attempts to strip me of my license through multiple proceedings at the Bar Association, and the efforts by Zionists to harm my livelihood, I will likely have to launch some kind of crowdfunding project. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with experience in this field, as well as from volunteers who could help me get the project off the ground. Thank you. What is certain is that whatever they do to me will be nothing compared to what has been done to Palestinians — and especially to Palestinian prisoners — for decades, perhaps in fact for 106 years already. I am grateful for every show of support and every form of assistance, and I would be glad to receive private messages.

@yudhanjaya @TomorrowMan575 I met a guy who runs an IT consultancy and also teaches in some universities/institutes. He said of 100 grads only about 10 are usable. I can’t remember what he said about fixing it, though.

@TomorrowMan575 If it doesn't come through 3-4 years of dedicated learning then it's a disaster. What would we do with a plumber who's learned all the theory but never learned how to fix a pipe in practice?

I'm on the other side of this argument. Most IT grads are bad hires because they're totally useless: they get taught theory, but nowhere near enough practical programming. In theory they can work, in practice they're disasters on a codebase. [1/3]
Kelum Samarasena@kelums

We make over 20000 IT Grads [ Probably over 300000 IT ready adults] . Prob is their readiness to face the music. Completely change our teaching we must. Most teachers ban AI use in class. I think that's damn wrong. We gotta get kids use AI, challenge, and be better than AI.

Remembering Mangala’s 70th ❤️🙏 This year for what would have been late Minister Mangala Samaraweera @MangalaLK ’s 70th Birthday on April 21st, his family are engaging in several initiatives over the course of 2026 that reflect his various interests, 3 of which we are happy to share today: 1. Mangala Would be Reading the @ExaminerLK An avid reader, Mangala was proud to gather a personal library of over 2500 books in his lifetime. And in 2025, the majority of these books were donated to public libraries and institutions around the country. This year, in keeping with that spirit, the Samaraweera family is supporting upto 100 Free 6-Month subscriptions to The Examiner. They believe Mangala would have been a fan & close-reader of this well-researched weekly journal. In advance of the occasion, some subscriptions have been allocated to institutions already including: The Strivers Network, The BCIS Library, and the Lakmahal Library. If you wish to access subscriptions please fill out the form in this link: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI… The family encourages others to also consider similar means of supporting journalists & journalism that allow them to build their reporting independently. 2. Mangala Would Have Been Viewing Jezima Mohamed’s Exhibition of Batik Art Both Mangala and his mother Khema were fans of Jezima Mohamed, the now 86 year old batik master artist from Matara. Her contemporary work debuted and sold at the recent Ceylon Literary Festival & Matara Festival for the Arts, and this year she will hold a solo exhibition in collaboration with Mangala’s Freedom Hub, the founding initiative behind #MataraForArts. Dates are TBA, but you can follow her work on Instagram @ jezlookbatik & receive first update on the exhibit via @ mataraforarts 3. Mangala would be Sea-swimming & encouraging others to, & SeaSisters wants to help more women learn how to, for free! Mangala always loved his sea swims and being by the ocean and as Khema’s Boy, was supported by & championed the strong women of his life. SeaSisters, based in Weligama, teaches women and girls how to swim and surf for free, enabling them to claim their right to the ocean, participate in the tourism economy, and advocate for marine conservation and climate resilience. They are a fantastic grassroots organization empowering women and girls as change agents and you can join us in supporting them by: Direct donations seasisterslk.com/donate Sharing their story: instagram.com/sea_sisters_lk @Chanch_SL

News organisations need to be unflinching in their use of strong language to describe Trump. Too often we have normalised the abnormal. Mea culpa. I did it myself at the BBC and often came up against institutional timidity. My weekend read. open.substack.com/pub/historynev…

You know what’s the closest country to Israel in population? Papua New Guinea. Not joking. Nearly identical number of people. Imagine if our entire foreign policy was structured around Papua New Guinea. If there were people who were Papua New Guinea First all over Congress and media. And we had given Papua New Guinea over $300 billion and people were saying it wasn’t enough! That we had spent $8 trillion on wars supporting Papua New Guinea and people said we needed one more war for them! And if you ever criticized our ludicrous support for Papua New Guinea, everyone in media would call you an anti-Papua New Guineaist and said no one should ever talk to you again. Now, you’re beginning to see how absurd our support for Israel is.
