The straw that broke the camels back. I'm now on Twitter. So many issues with @dcpublicschools to tackle. The buses not showing up is just one!

Thank you to the parents who volunteered their time today to chaperone. It is disappointing our students did not make it to the Farm. We hope @dcpublicschools will resolve this ongoing citywide issue. @CMCharlesAllen @cmdgrosso @RobertWhite_DC @joeweedon @ChmnMendelson

@watilo @SouthwestAir Paying to sit together is relatively a new thing in air travel, and just another way of extorting more fees out of the common person. Once one airline did it they all had to do it, DOT encourages airlines to seat children for free with their parents. What's next, paying 4 coffee?

my wife and two kids (5 and 2) are flying @SouthwestAir today. and because i refuse to pay for seats, their seats were auto assigned. my 2 year old in his own row without his mom or sister. i sorta figured when the websites breaks out age 0-4, they'd factor this in but nah...

@dcpublicschools the latest aspen update makes it really hard to access grades. Can you bring the old platform back where grades are easily found on mobile. The web version is terrible for accessing grades. Sorry to tweet but I couldn't find a better way to contact you.

I was talking to my neighbor, and we got on the topic of towels and how I always seem to have so many to wash. She asked me this question. Do you use a new towel after every shower? Yes, I do. She told me she changes hers every few showers. So I am curious what y'all do? Change them every time or use the same one more than once? 🤔🤔

@wmata My goal is to get to work on time but when it takes 12-15 minutes for schedule adjustments between waterfront and l'enfant plaza, I can't meet my goal. Can you please work on a better alignment of yellow/green line merge schedules? This week has been particularly bad. Thanks!

As we gear up for the new year, consider how public transportation can help you reach your goals in 2026. Is your resolution to exercise more? Take transit! People who ride the bus or train walk up to 30 minutes more each day.

I had an incredibly bizarre moment at the No Kings rally yesterday. It's stuck with me till today... As I was out there, wearing my MAGA hat and Freedom T-shirt, just walking my Gold Retriever and talking to people, letting them pet my dog... some folks literally ran from me. Genuinely just took off running, clearly doing it, to get away from me. I've never experienced that before. In fact, I cannot remember a single instance where anyone has ever looked at me, and then bolted. Not one time. I'm extremely non-threatening. I smiled nearly the entire time even when people said mean things, I was nothing but kind to everyone and donated money to every single street performer I saw. Yet... some people ran. It was a weird thing. And maybe that’s the strangest part about America right now... you can smile, be kind, give, and still be seen as a villain by people who’ve never said a word to you. They didn’t see me. They saw everything they’ve been told to fear, never knowing what I did for Western North Carolina, my story, or why I believe what I believe now. I don't hate them for running. Because I used to believe stories like that too... I used to think Trump was the worst. I openly said so to many people over the years. That was until life forced me to actually meet the people behind the labels I placed them under. Yes, there are a lot of radicalized crazy people on the Left and yes, many of them want me dead. I know them well, they send me the most unhinged threats nearly every day. But then I remember how I thought, how MY mind was changed... ...and as I was walking back to my car with 2 people who were screaming at me It just dawned on me: A lot of us are just strangers who’ve been taught to run from each other. When we run instead of engage and talk, we lose. The people who convinced me didn't run from me, they engaged me, they challenged me, they RIGHTFULLY made me feel like an idiot for not thinking through my ideas and beliefs. We need more of that, not less.

American Trail keepers are mourning the loss of Nick, an 18-year-old male California sea lion who died suddenly Aug. 7. The median life expectancy of California sea lions in human care is 23 years. On July 14, keepers first noticed Nick had a decreased appetite and less energy than usual. After a consultation with the Zoo’s veterinary team, Nick received a pain medication due to concerns that discomfort could be resulting in his behavior change. However, Nick’s appetite did not improve, and he exhibited worsening weight loss and uncharacteristic behaviors, including avoiding his keepers and the other sea lions. On Aug. 7, the Zoo’s veterinary team undertook a full examination, which required placing Nick under general anesthesia. Nick went into cardiac arrest while under anesthesia, and despite every effort to resuscitate him, staff were unable to revive Nick. A final pathology report will provide more information in the coming weeks. American Trail keeper Victoria Adams described Nick as being a charming and fun individual to work with. “Nick was such a delightful sea lion to see and experience here at American Trail,” said Adams. “Visitors from all over were astonished to see how strong and smart he was and see his unique variety of special training behaviors.” A true ambassador for his species, Nick's personality and size—more than 700 lbs. during breeding season—made him popular with visitors, providing them with an opportunity to learn about an iconic North American species and what steps they can take to protect marine wildlife. “Nick was such a sweet and silly sea lion,” said Katelyn Stache, assistant curator of carnivores at Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance. “Even with his large size, he was incredibly patient and seemed unaware of just how big he was — which made him the perfect animal to help teach many of us how to work with sea lions. He knew so many different behaviors on cue, but his vocalizations were always my favorite. I’m really going to miss his funny grin and seeing the trust he shared with his caretakers. What a special boy.” Born in the wild, Nick was found alone in Laguna Beach, California as a newborn with his umbilical cord still attached. He was rescued and hand-reared by the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, who cared for him until he was 10 months old. Because of his reliance on human caretakers, Nick was deemed to be unreleasable, and transferred to the DZCA in Denver, Colorado. He moved to NZCBI on Oct. 6, 2023, to be temporarily housed until DZCA complete renovations to the sea lion habitat. He made a big splash when he arrived in Washington, D.C., impressing visitors with his large personality, unique dance moves and booming bark. Nick was expected to return to DZCA later this year. According to the team at DZCA, Nick’s legacy lives on through his two offspring who still call DZCA home, Gunnison and Ady, his mate, Luci, and the countless human lives he touched during his lifetime. Although considered “of least concern” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List, wild California sea lions face dangers such as human conflict and ocean pollution. Those interested in helping protect marine mammals can consider reducing their use of single use plastics and recycling, when possible, as well as choosing sustainably source seafood.
