Peter Et Cetera. A Peter Cetera/Chicago cover band that only plays through the first chorus of each song.

What the Party doesn't realize is that they lack the power to decide whether Hasan fits in the tent or not. They still don't realize that they need people like Hasan, Mayor Mamdani, & Graham Platner more than they need the Party.

What's missing from this dumbshit Hasan Piker debate is that 3.1m people follow him on Twitch & another 1.3m on YouTube whether the Party wants to ordain him or not. And this is actually a debate about whether the Party wants to excommunicate those 4.4m young voters.

@matdryhurst When R Kelly's listenership disppeared, it wasn't a critique of the music. No one will reference sonic quality when he's denied various achievements. I think before a sincere critique can be formed, the critic must first respect the artist. And people just don't respect gen AI.

It's a worthy question AI art is distinct in being critiqued as a proxy for wider AI related questions and often misunderstandings. I'm fairly confident transporting any art object to an overseas show consumes more energy than almost any piece of AI related art ever shown in a museum has done. On originality if someone were to run embedding similarity across all paintings in major museum collections I expect the results would be brutal. But with art history we have 7 centuries between a Giotto and a Rothko so if one is lazy or very motivated you can point to that variation as a defense of human originality vs the straw man of whatever bad AI generated thing you didn't like The truth as best I can tell is that distinction is hard and rare whatever you use and whenever you live. Distinction is also scary because everyone aspires to it, and no tool or cheap shot will get you there
derrick has started yet another project@dvsch

A really interesting question came up in my workshop today: are their artwork critiques/art critics who criticize the artworks based on the ethical implications the way AI art is criticized? Asking not as a gotcha but for actual frameworks to look at.

What's frustratingly baked into all of this generative video trash is a complete contempt for craft. It's like (poorly) copying someone's answers on a test & then making fun of them for the time it took them to solve the problems. These models are like Dunning Kruger magnets.

@Sturgeons_Law Is that really the case, though? Certainly there are more artists complaining about it, since recording has become so accessible & distribution is no longer gatekept. But there also seems to be more artists making money.

It's definitely harder to make a living as a musician now, which is bad, but you don't need to be a full-time musician to make great music. Most of the underground musicians who've made great music for the past few decades have had day jobs.

I think it's true of music, too. But that aside, I don't think it's just an economic problem. In some ways, it's easier to make music, even pop music, now than it ever was. Many major hits are made on Logic using stock plugins & presets, for instance, which most anyone can afford
kate wehwalt@mcmansionhell

1) simply not true about music at all 2) an economic problem disguised as a cultural problem. there was just far less constraint on who could afford to do art and be artists in all recent generations except for ours. when only rich people can make art no art gets made.

@doronstudio It's not about whether or not AI can effectively do creative things. It's about whether people stop caring about that aspect of products. Look at what happened to architecture.

“designers are cooked” is a braindead take btw. we’re a little microwaved but the real jobs getting fried are ones that are almost strictly logic-based, like programming & accounting. it’s naive to think a creative endeavor would be the first thing replaced by a logic based tool
☀️AliquisNovus☀️@PalmyrPar

Cooked” refers to your opportunity to earn money from contracted work relating to design, which is fast approaching inevitably tiny levels. I’m not even particularly bullish on AI but it’s fairly obvious that among the first occupations to get cut by 90% will be design.

I owe a lot to @democracynow. When I was a teenager finding my way on the left in the early 2000s, it was one of the only places you could go that wasn't swimming in jingoism and deference to the Bush administration. Here's to the next 30 years.

Are people who are obsessed w/ to-do list apps attracted to vibe coding or are people who are obsessed with vibe coding attracted to to-do list apps? Has anyone deconstructed the magnetism there? Are they all ultimately just lonely horn dogs trying to recreate Samantha from Her?

@ScaredChris Water + popcorn sounds like a completely psychotic combination to me. But anyhow you can literally pay for a $30 "popcorn pass" & get $5 large popcorns for a year at AMC.
