#COP29 ended last month with the usual last-minute challenges and showcased a mix of progress, frustration, and the urgent need for action. Here are our 5 key takeaways from Baku ⬇️ catf.us/2024/12/five-k…

@RobertHoglund Where do removals that originate with “passive” biogenic uptake but then include permanent geological storage fit? (E.g., some BiCRS)

💣 Warming won't stop at net zero if we cheat and count natural CO₂ uptake as target fulfilment, or if we neutralize fossil emissions with shortlived CO₂ storage. A Very important paper in Nature by Myles Allen et al was just released together with a briefing note.

@ryankatzrosene It seems like the focus here on land-use change under-represents the present day emissions from the full land sector (22.8% of total global GHG emissions)

3) Yes, it's fossil fuels, but historically LAND use was the main driver of CO2 emissions, up until 1950 (and it remained the largest share of historical cumulative emissions until about 1980).

🚨Global Carbon Project 2024 assessment is out! Here are my fav 10 charts (from the 2nd half report😅): 1) Energy use by source. Fossil energy just keep growing; hydro and nuclear declining 😬; but renewables growing exponentially (at this rate they'll triple in a decade)!

“The strength of the voluntary carbon market is also its greatest weakness.” #COP29 negotiators finalized a key framework for international carbon markets today, but strong oversight is needed to ensure high-integrity markets that benefit the climate. catf.us/2024/11/catf-w…

Policy experts, incl. CATF's Kathy Fallon & Rebecca Sanders-Demott, urge the U.S. Court of Appeals to uphold the SEC’s requirement for companies to disclose carbon offset use. Transparency is key for investors to assess risks tied to emissions commitments. catf.us/2024/08/carbon…

Our land, energy, and climate systems are coupled. Managing ecosystems to protect biospheric sinks and accelerating decarbonization are both critical to addressing climate change. That's why we work on zero-carbon solutions AND ecosystem carbon management: lnkd.in/egFK-txp

What does this mean for climate change and decarbonization? "The less carbon the land ecosystems absorb, the less fossil fuels the world can burn before humankind blows past global climate targets, said Anthony Walker, an ecosystem modeler at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory."

Land ecosystems have been buying us time to make the transition to a zero-carbon future by absorbing nearly one-third of fossil, industry, and other human GHG emissions. But in years with El Nino conditions that capacity drops, according to recent research.

Federal agencies like @USDA, @CFTC, and @SECGov play crucial roles in crafting strong regulations that protect the credibility and liquidity of voluntary carbon markets.

Even if we hit the brakes on emissions today, there is still too much CO2 in the atmosphere to meet net zero by 2050. As of Wednesday, the DAC Hubs program issued the first tranche of award funding for Project Cypress 👉 clearpath.org/our-take/dac-h…
