What an interesting question. Since i can't be bothered to look up actual literature (or even ask an AI), let me share my mental model of EQ. To me, emotional intelligence is composed of two distinct capabilities: 1. Theory of Mind: the ability to get into other people's shoes, as it were. To visualise how someone will feel in a certain situation and how they are likely to react as a consequence. This capability is highly correlated with IQ in my experience. The low-IQ criminal is often unable to imagine how his victim will feel and consequently how likely they are to retaliate or pursue legal action. The bully in middle school is genuinely puzzled to see you cry (and totally unprepared for you to hit back) because they're too dense to understand how you feel. Smarter people don't have a problem with this. Except at the very high of the intelligence spectrum, the autistic genius or the psychopath. I haven't met too many psychopaths, but i have been privileged to associate with a few of the former kind, and i can state with reasonable confidence that their lack of empathy stems from the same deficiency in Theory of Mind as their less intellectually fortunate peers. However, most of us aren't spending our days with 140+ IQ savants so this is a niche problem. 2. Emotional Tools: once you know how the other person feels, you still have to be able to react to them in a way that makes them feel understood, or valued or loved or safe. This requires a set of emotional tools that you acquire through experience and active learning. In my view, this capability is not inborn like IQ but is a social skill that can be deliberately acquired. There is no reason why it should be negatively correlated with IQ, but in our cultural context it often is. Because higher-IQ people in our culture get fewer opportunities to develop these emotional tools. The classic Indian (upper-middle class) grind of entrance exams/engineering college/competitive career leaves little time to develop this easily-acquired skill. This is why it _appears_, especially if you're associating predominantly with people in the 120-135 IQ range, and especially when you're young, that emotional intelligence is negatively correlated with IQ. But it's really not. If anything the correlation is mostly positive.

It's amazing how efficient airline staff can get when they have their GM travelling on the same flight. All SOPs are being followed to the T. I take the same flight twice a month, never seen them this courteous as well. Executive leadership should travel more often 😁#TrueStory

@kunalb11 If the presentation doesn't matter over substance, why do companies invest so much on design? Isn't tone in a conversation predominantly UX?

Progress is slower when one focuses more on tone of feedback given versus the substance of feedback. Being offended with tone of feedback makes the brain reject or ignore the substance.
