My son @Lin_Manuel and I have joined filmmakers, creators, and industry professionals in signing a letter opposing the proposed Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger. This deal would reduce the number of major U.S. film studios to just four. That means fewer stories told, fewer jobs, higher costs for audiences, and less room for independent and diverse voices. This is an important moment. Whenever a small number of powerful entities determine what gets made — and on what terms — in any field, it leaves creators and independent businesses with fewer viable paths to sustain their work. This will negatively affect the livelihood of so many people in our industry. And on a creative level it limits the breadth of expression of different viewpoints if only a few determine what we all get to watch and experience in theaters and on tv and the media.
Alvaro Bedoya@BedoyaUSA

When an industry is being consolidated by a handful of powerful companies, there is an overwhelming dynamic of *fear* -- as in, If I speak out, will I get work in this town again? A thousand people have now popped that bubble, paving the way for everyone else to oppose this deal.

This merger would put CNN and CBS News under the control of Donald Trump’s allies. A single corporation with so much control over key parts of the media -- that is also answerable to the Trump administration -- is a danger to our democracy. Vladimir Putin would be proud. (2/2)

The proposed mega-merger between Paramount-Skydance and Warner Bros. can and must be stopped. Not only would this merger result in higher costs, job losses, and fewer entertainment choices for Americans, it would gravely threaten the freedom of the press. (1/2)

Today, I received a notification of another death in ICE custody. That’s 47 deaths during Trump’s second term. We must stand up and demand real accountability — ICE has a duty to provide care to those in their custody.

This anti-merger letter packs a punch. And it's cosigned by multiple people who have deals with Paramount or Warner Bros. They are courageously speaking out, even in the midst of possible harm to their careers. This should give others courage too -- across society.

More than 1,000 professionals across the TV and film industry, including J.J. Abrams and David Fincher, have signed an open letter opposing the impending Paramount acquisition of Warner Bros. "This transaction would further consolidate an already concentrated media landscape, reducing competition at a moment when our industries—and the audiences we serve—can least afford it," it reads. thewrap.com/media-platform… Photos via Getty Images
