Most education "experts" and think tank folks spend their days diagnosing what's wrong with schools. They write papers. They complain on X. They debate policy from 30,000 feet. I'm in the kitchen actually cooking. New in the U-Turns series: → Why I left the corporate charter world → Mise en Place: how I actually set up shop → A Dish for Us: the prevention model we're building (K-2 Learn to Read / 3-5 Read to Learn, direct instruction, two principals, no fads) This coming Saturday: → Hiring the Cooks: Principal and Director Hiring May 9: → Teacher Talent: Using James Clear and TLAC to create a development system and incentive system that seems to be working No grandiose missions. No ed-tech savior complex. Just preventing gaps instead of endlessly trying to close them. If you're tired of commentary without creation, this one's for you. jrobinson.substack.com/p/a-dish-for-u…

What an embarrassment Only two percent, TWO PERCENT of teachers say they learned about effective literacy instruction (i.e. phonics) in their teacher prep program

A lot of people complain in the Ed Reform space. Checkout the newest chapter of U turns to see how my team and I complain by doing better as we transform the first charter school in middle TN. It's like Kitchen Confidential, but for school types. A Dish for Us open.substack.com/pub/jrobinson/…

What the hell. Nobody's looking. On the weekends, my U-turns aren't about education-- they're edits of poems, books and more. Finally completed.

@karenvaites Sometimes I just wish schools came with warning labels. For real. It would make things easier for parents. Something like this --

'Some parents were not convinced by [the superintendent's] assurances. “If screen time is as minimal as claimed, there should be little barrier to opting out," Carrie Palmisano, a Cynwyd parent who wants to opt out her rising third grader and kindergartener in the fall, told board members Monday.' inquirer.com/education/lowe…

This story is one to watch, because it is bound to recur. 200 parents sign petition to opt out of devices. District says they can't. By @maddiehanna:

Check out my new article on the U-Turns substack, titled Mise En Place. In this one, I share my audit tool for when I get into schools ( it's messy and imprecise) and I also describe the use of whole staff stack audits. Give it a read, repost if it resonates. Thanks. jrobinson.substack.com/p/mise-en-plac…

We do a hybrid approach. 74K flat salary for all certified teachers, and up to 7k in bonuses, distributed quarterly for development goals on Teacher Report Card 1. Results are paid for in Q4. It's our first year--and we've 95% intent to return, 0 unplanned vacancies. I'll be doing a longform piece about it on my substack soon. The bonus structure changes based on teacher level-- but everybody needs to do well with Report Card 1 first.

If (and this is a big if) we grant that teachers are underpaid, setting a minimum salary seems like entirely the wrong incentive structure What about the 30-year, accomplished veteran? Upscale the top end of the income spectrum and reward experience and excellence

I appreciate @MrDanielBuck's points on behavior in the classrooms and the role parenting plays in it. However, there's another layer upstream when we look at the ways many teacher's may have been reared by their own parents in the early 2000s. The work of @JonHaidt , @RIKKISCHLOTT ought to be something coaches and principals account for in their development and incentive plans. See infographic below--

SEL is the equivalent of believing those "Be Cautious-- New Driver " stickers are a law and that other drivers must heed the request and change for the kid. Instead of preparing kids for the world , SEL provides kids with the illusion that others and the world will cater to them, which is detrimental on many fronts. Build strong individuals, and they'll be just fine-- no stickers or SEL needed.

SEL is absurd when you realize the concept is so ambiguous it couldn't possibly be useful. See @annaegalite discussing a meta-analysis claiming "clear" evidence SEL improved grades: "The operational definition [researchers] rely upon is this: 'Universal school-based social and emotional learning interventions support the development of intra- and interpersonal skills to promote physical and psychological health for all students in a given school or grade, including fostering the development of emotional intelligence, healthy behavior regulation, identity formation, and the skills necessary for establishing and maintaining supportive relationships and making empathic and equitable decisions in the best interest of the school community.'" educationnext.org/do-universal-s…

A visual summary for an article I wrote about our bias for academic growth -- not academic achievement. It's about incentives and goals. While I write my lower-brow articles, I'm a sucker for AI to make infographics. They're also more enjoyable. Article in thread.
