When you combine explicit instruction with high expectations and classroom rules. Don't take it from me. Take it from the kids. 😊

In my work, I often have the pleasure of meeting excellent teachers who are passionate about improving their craft to benefit their students. The one thing these teachers tend to have in common is that their classrooms are generally very low tech. These teachers tend to have the best test scores in their buildings and they regularly get positive feedback from their students about the manner of instruction. Good teaching isn’t “magic” and it doesn’t require the latest technology or app. There is a method. It’s not new and it’s not flashy, but it’s effective and can be done by anyone willing to take the time and effort to learn it. Just ask these teachers: @SciInTheMaking @StamStam193 @SoLInTheWild @smorrisey @dailystem @VinceBoley @AmberBHaven

Either Edutwitter doesn't like this blog, or the post has been nerfed by the algorithm, but a v small fraction of its reads have been from twitter. If you enjoyed it, please do share 🙏🙏🙏

There are a few phrases in education that I really have a problem with. One is "when done well..." This relativistic and unfalsifiable claim is applied to all sorts of pedagogical interventions, but it hampers criticality and growth. Link in reply, please share if you can!

Today I got to put what I learned into practice during a FASE Reading lesson. My most reluctant reader was smiling from ear to ear and asking to read as he experienced success. When he read the word ‘ferocious’, he was absolutely beaming!

I just finished writing my reflections on last week’s @TeachLikeAChamp workshop on the SoR in Memphis. @Doug_Lemov and team do an incredible job and somehow manage to squeeze a week’s worth of information into two short days. Truly excellent and valuable PD!

Writing improves when it’s built systematically from the sentence level up. Start with kernel sentences. Expand them using content knowledge. Then organize those ideas into paragraphs. When Ss have something to say and a structure for saying it, the quality of writing improves.

Appears to be under the impression that public high schools in America teach 16th century English literature. Or literature at all. (One reason they don’t is that for every thing people “should know” there’s some guy saying schools gotta start doing it.) Schools should make kids read books. They should teach science math history economics languages art and music really well (they don’t currently). That’s plenty. Every parent in America should be teaching how credit cards work.
Miles Commodore@miles_commodore

Every public high school in America should be teaching how credit cards work, how to get a mortgage, and what mutual funds are and how they function. 16th century English literature is great, but how about equipping our children with what they need in the REAL world.

🧵Students don’t struggle with writing because they need to practice writing more essays. Many struggle because they don’t yet know enough about the topic to write substantively about it and were never explicitly taught the sentence-level building blocks of strong writing. 1/4

The student who can't write a coherent paragraph about photosynthesis doesn't have a "paragraph structure" problem; they have a photosynthesis problem.🧵⤵️

@LeslieLaud @AmmarMerhbi I see. So the difference between oral expansion (SRSD) and kernel expansion (TWR) is that one is done orally and the other is written?

@SciInTheMaking @AmmarMerhbi We begin with oral sentence expansion. We work on sentences in the context of short writes - paragraph. Sentence combining etc. There’s no meaningful way to teach sentences in isolation. Doesn’t transfer.

@SciInTheMaking I like The Writing Revolution, but I think it is primarily useful as a method of getting pupils to use writing to support their grasp of academic subjects rather than as a writing curriculum in itself (i.e. it supplements, rather than constitutes, effective writing instruction).
