When you combine explicit instruction with high expectations and classroom rules. Don't take it from me. Take it from the kids. 😊

Benjamin Bloom's taxonomy of learning correctly characterized higher order skills as dependent on prior mastery of lower order skills. The progressives changed this to the idea that higher order skills were MORE VALUABLE than lower order skills, a complete misinterpretation.

Concept Mapping + “Accept-Challenge-Extend” Peer Feedback= Students externalizing, refining, and reorganizing knowledge What I really like is how this combination turns concept mapping from a static graphic organizer into a dynamic and fluid revision process grounded in retrieval, elaboration, and knowledge reorganization. Even better: accepting, challenging, or extending a partner’s concept map becomes another layer of retrieval practice. Students must recall knowledge to evaluate relationships between concepts, challenge why certain causal links make sense or do not, and explain how additional ideas could strengthen the map, all of which deepens encoding and strengthens future recall.

A school sent me NWEA MAP math data who have been using Facts on Fire this year. 6 min/day using a combo of taped problems & timed retrieval practice. Its amazing what teachers can accomplish with their students when given empirically validated interventions & materials.

Modeled my thinking and facilitated retrieval today with students as we made a sort-of-concept-map (@SciInTheMaking) after a 3-week-long water filtration unit. Used @MrJFinch’s paragraph model for the reflection assessment. Give me your constructive feedback! 🫶

I think in the business they call this a tease… just recorded the first episode of the new podcast cohosted by myself and @StamStam193, focused on the science of learning, by teachers for teachers. We kicked things off with a deep dive into the Modal Model of Memory with the incomparable @S_Oberle and @helenrey. Can’t wait for you all to listen. Stay tuned.

I stopped using PowerPoint this year and replaced it with live modeling. It’s been 👌🏽 ! I use Goodnotes for live modeling. If I need an image to help communicate my message, I either draw it out myself or copy and paste it in there.

New Blog Post📝 For years I have had my PowerPoint and at the start of my career it was my crutch I found it difficult to deviate from. Now, I have changed my planning and found less of a need to stress over a PowerPoint. Link Below 👇

@SciInTheMaking @adamboxer1 I use notability on my iPad. I am not a big fan of PowerPoints. I do think they can be done well, but is generally not the best option.

@f_gslow @adamboxer1 1. Your back is not towards the students. 2. Respects the limits of working memory. PowerPoint can be done well but it often involves more work.

@SciInTheMaking @adamboxer1 Forgive my ignorance, but isn't it the same as writing on the white board? What's the difference? The equipment?
