@rustie5555 @AotearoaSam @dan_brunskill Fun fact: New Zealand has never voted on or been consulted with on any voting system that did not involve geographic electorates and AFAIK it's never even been polled

@rustie5555 @AotearoaSam @dan_brunskill Yeah you could plausibly see the Greens picking up two more tops and NZF have no real options? Act could maybe do better in the sea of East Auckland horrorburbs but even then it's only, what, three seats.

Woah this is surprise, from a friend in Tāmaki's letterbox - the ACT candidate seemingly only going for the candidate vote? We're familiar with the nudge-n-wink in Epsom but not even saying "two ticks" and encouraging this vote split on a flyer is something else

@rustie5555 @AotearoaSam @dan_brunskill Well it still doesn't do *that* much for the accidental overhangs either unless you really go to town on it and even then only for specifically the "mid sized minor parties don't do well enough in electorates" version.

@rustie5555 @AotearoaSam @dan_brunskill Which is probably either "abolish the Māori seats" or "move to Supplementary Member without a referendum" but could be something dumber still I haven't thought of

@rustie5555 @AotearoaSam @dan_brunskill There is no way we're going to be that lucky, we are going to get an egregious proportionality violation that swings the government and then an insane kneejerk reaction

@rustie5555 @AotearoaSam @dan_brunskill There are a lot of possible solutions ranging from big picture (change to a different proportional representation system) to moderate (remove split voting) to minor (give otherwise overhung electorates to the highest polling candidate from a party still entitled to seats)

@rustie5555 @AotearoaSam @dan_brunskill MMP was only ever designed to work if the major parties stayed major or minor parties started winning electorates and we should fix it now while it's not a partisan issue before it breaks badly in one party's favour

Just pulled off the whole "shock proprietor by ordering in Mandarin" thing. Twist one is that it was in a Korean restaurant, twist two is that I could hear her children speaking Mandarin and I think the shock came from the fact that i was Not Supposed to Know they were doing that

@AbsentHog @Bob247874 Like this, a good 75% of the culture wars are just the material interests of some small interest group laundered as a broader culture war issue to get more people on board.

NZ has had more than a few left green NIMBYs have come around More oddly, a bunch of right wingers who were onto planning deregulation before it was cool now think unaffordable houses are fine and fuck property rights
sam@sam_d_1995

I sincerely wonder if any of the boomer faux progressive NIMBYs will ever have an epiphany that they’re the ones responsible for our housing crisis, worsening sprawl, and increased carbon emissions or will they just keep ranting about how we can only build “affordable housing”

@Bob247874 @AbsentHog As opposed to National which has always had a mix of views, with YIMBYs always in the minority but waning and waxing over the years - probably at the high point with and under Judith Collins but still stronger now than in the 1990s/2000s

@Bob247874 @AbsentHog ACT has never had some YIMBY market urbanist past that it's betrayed, it has always wanted unwalkable exurban sprawl legally mandated as the only legitimate form of new housing and thinks Epsom villa owners have a property right in having well off neighbours

@dilanesper Map error: you have the entire United Kingdom colored in for England’s title. FIFA recognizes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as separate nations. They all have their own teams.
