The repercussions of the war launched by the United States and Israel on Iran, and Tehran’s retaliatory strikes across the Gulf, are being felt along the RSF’s supply lines. Shipments sent via Libya from the United Arab Emirates — the group’s main backer — have been disrupted, sources involved in Benghazi’s RSF supply network tell Mada Masr. storage.googleapis.com/madamasr/en/20…

Fasher’s fall sent a shockwave through decision making corridors in Egypt. In a flurry of meetings, officials and advisors weighed whether to scale up intervention in Sudan to save the military or if it was already too late. What did they decide in the end? Read how Egypt is balancing relations with the UAE and coordination with Turkey, as it tries to scale its intervention to secure a ceasefire. madamasr.com/en/2025/11/20/…

Trump pitched Monday’s unveiling of his postwar Gaza plan as a major triumph of his own making. But sources from across the region paint a different picture of the new Board of Peace: a process marked by “betrayal” and unsettled plans. madamasr.com/en/2025/10/02/…

By mid May, in a meeting in the Saudi capital of Riyadh, Syrian Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa seemed to have completed his political transformation. Gone was the man who once had an American bounty of US$10 million on his head. Gone was the moniker that had marked his existential opposition to Israel. But within two months, this political transformation came crashing down as violent clashes in Suwayda undermined his state-building vision. What was behind such a quick turnaround? Much of the answer rests on the complex web of relations that have slowly engulfed the post-Assad landscape. Mada Masr spoke to regional diplomats, sources from Turkey and political actors across Syria, including from within the Druze community, to understand the fight to secure the position of architect of the “New Syria,” with the US and Israel in the driver’s seat. To force men, women, & children into such conditions under the guise of "relief" is to deny their very worth as human beings. No soul should have to clamor for sustenance like this. History will not absolve those who orchestrated this suffering nor those who watched in silence.

A few weeks before Sudan’s war broke out, Abdel Rahim Dagalo sat in his luxury residence in eastern Khartoum’s upscale Garden City neighborhood. Dressed in his kadmul, the RSF deputy commander spoke brashly to the young Darfuri commanders gathered around him of an imminent attack on RSF positions. “The walls of the General Command won’t protect them once the war begins," he said. Nearly two years later, Abdel Rahim’s prophecy has not come to pass, and the RSF have faced a string of defeats at the hands of the Sudanese military. But increasingly, the shadowy brother of the Dagalo family is the one charting the path forward for the paramilitary group. While his brothers had once dreamed of capturing the state and reaping the benefits of Sudan’s post-revolution integration into the global economy, Abdel Rahim is prepared to return to the peripheries where the RSF has always held sway, threatening to drag all of Sudan along with him. Over the past six months, Mada Masr has spoken to 23 sources, ranging from those close to the Dagalo family and its economic empire to Chadian security sources, RSF officers, Sudanese diplomats, politicians and intelligence officers, to understand how Abdel Rahim, long-overshadowed by Hemedti, has become the Dagalo brother that will decide what comes next for the paramilitary group that nearly seized control of all of Sudan. Since Monday, Israel has conducted thousands of airstrikes across Lebanon’s south and east and has continued to target Beirut in attempts to assassinate Hezbollah leaders. More than 650 people have been killed, 7000 injured and around 400,000 displaced from southern Lebanon in under a week. Regional and international parties are measuring the possibility of a ceasefire to “open a way for dialogue and understanding,” according to a source directly involved in the negotiations and a parliamentarian from the Lebanese Amal party. However, even if a 21-day ceasefire were accepted, a larger deal would face significant obstacles, according to sources informed of the talks who have spoken to Mada Masr from various capitals in recent days. As Israel’s military moves attempt to impose a fait accompli on the ground, they are leaving little room for an increasingly isolated Hezbollah to maneuver diplomatically.
