@ManishEarth If cognates can spread over 2000+ years and also across entirely different linguistic phyla and still be recognizable cognates, it doesn't seem unreasonable to suppose that continuous development in a single-language line could retain recognizable reflexes.

yeah i found this rather jarring when I watched the first movie, since in a movie set in the far future one modern language and multiple conlangs doesn't break suspension of disbelief (the modern language is an affordance for the viewer), but two doesn't feel that way

so modern mandarin, which paul & yueh speak in DUNE, can survive 20,000 years. but all of the arabic and persian used in herbert's book -- references to ramadan and sunni muslims and an algerian cry of resistance -- would become outdated? come on, man. newyorker.com/culture/cultur…

In Persian, there are many words that need ZWNJ characters, but @skype removes these characters after they have been sent. This results in the meaning of the word being changed or rendered meaningless as a result. Would it be possible for you to fix this problem?

@jensimmons I don’t hang out a lot in the css world so don’t know all the experts there, but from what I see on the type side +11 for Jason Pamental: he does great implementation, deep knowledge on both sides, and great teacher.

I should explain: I who are your favorite experts who have a deep understanding of the CSS that is used to create great typography, *plus* an in-depth understanding of typography itself — typesetting & graphic design, historically, internationally. Who teach, write about it…

GDI exposes named font instances as regular fonts for font variations-unaware applications using the legacy GDI API. Is there a way to get the variation settings from such a legacy API font to e.g. pass it to HarfBuzz when shaping?

@simoncozens I think the hidden surface removal can be baked into the animation axis using intermediate regions, but it is a little awkward. Tying compositing modes to variable axes would simplify a lot!
