Let’s all agree, tourism in Uganda is extremely expensive for Ugandans. At this point, a one week trip to Dubai, Tokyo, Egypt, or Morocco can easily cost less than spending a week at facilities like Chobe Safari Lodge, Mweya Safari Lodge, Paraa Safari Lodge, Apoka Safari Lodge, Nile Safari Lodge, or Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge. And the funniest part? Almost every serious tourism activity here is priced in USD as if ordinary Ugandans earn salaries from Washington DC. Do not let anyone deceive you. Most people you see constantly on those luxury local tourism trips are either heavily sponsored, financially backed, or there for business and gigs. I have visited many tourism destinations in Uganda myself, but honestly…the costs are brutal, when you are an Ugandan you are not treated the same as foreigners…it’s a fuss 🥹 Try asking about climbing Mount Rwenzori alone and watch your soul leave your body peacefully. Guides, park fees, accommodation, porters, gear, transport…before you even reach halfway, your wallet is already requesting rescue operations. And guess what? Some hotels can literally refuse to give you accommodation simply because you are Ugandan and they assume you will not spend enough while there. Almost all hotels in those areas quietly reserve a few rooms for foreigners, especially white tourists. The moment they are left with only those rooms and you call as a Ugandan, the questions begin: “Are you booking for yourself or someone else?” “What nationality are they?” The moment you say, “I’m Mumbere, booking for myself…” Then boom… “Oh sorry, we are fully booked.” 😩🥹😭
