Honored to be featured on The Frugal Architect with Amazon’s CTO, @Werner, sharing how we approached building @StreamOnMax, @discoveryplus, and other applications at @wbd with scalability, reliability, and efficiency in mind.

My heart goes out to all the folks impacted by the tech layoffs over the past few weeks. For those looking to jump right back in feel free to reach out, WBD is doing plenty of hiring across roles and levels (I have a few in the SRE and o11y domains)

@MissAmyTobey @ReinH I’m in the camera “on” camp: for the pets, for an understanding of body language and for accessibility reasons. I don’t require it but I do remind folks from time to time that there are those that benefit greatly from “cam on”

@ReinH I'm guessing the study did not control for the dopamine hit of seeing someone's cat

I prefer cameras on for selfish reasons but I'm sending this everywhere because if nothing else, I love seeing silly "cameras on" control schemes destroyed by science👩‍🔬🍿
Adam Grant@AdamMGrant

To fight Zoom fatigue, give people the freedom to turn their cameras off. New experiment: videos off reduces exhaustion and boosts engagement—especially for women and newcomers. Cameras off doesn't reflect disengagement. It helps to prevent burnout and promote attention.

@rkoutnik @norootcause 💯agreed it's not a great approach if the environment is toxic. That said, sometimes folks just don't realize they're isolating conversations and just need a nudge for the realization to hit.

@tleam @norootcause #2 often isn't the people going to DMs, - people are forced there. Trying to bring conversation back to public channels without addressing the reason they went private is like telling picnickers to move back to the table next to the hornet nest.

Managers: is the volume of Slack messages in your team channel a useful signal to you about whether everything is currently going ok on your team? (e.g., is a drop in volume a potential signal that something might be wrong?)

Why docs > preso’s: everyone consumes information at different rates - preso’s force everyone to the same playback speed. Docs, especially when provided prior to collaborating gives everyone the opportunity to digest ahead of time.

This type of community outreach and support was a key driver to me joining up with @audible_com. Really great to see us reach this milestone. #insideAudible
Newark Working Kitchens Delivers@NWKDelivers

We’ve delivered 500K meals to #Newark’s residents in need! We couldn’t have reached this milestone without our participating restaurants, delivery team, community organizations, and donors who have worked with us over the last few months to help us support our community.

@briannemcd IMO - very well. We take it seriously, have a number of very active ERGs (link below isn’t exhaustive of all DEI activities), and our People Principle of Activate Caring isn’t just a slogan (Audible’s community activism is one of the reasons I joined) audiblecareers.com/spectrum-and-b…

Really excited for this talk by Morgan Weever - Inclusivity Power-Up: Lessons Learned Mentoring Formerly Incarcerated Software Engineers. It's a group you don't hear about much in DEI. #vGHC20

Unfortunately, I fell prey to one of the perils of WFH virtual conferences : the terrible two tantrum so I missed out on a lot. What I picked up was great, I highly encourage checking out Joy's material: youtu.be/UG_X_7g63rY youtu.be/jZl55PsfZJQ
