Web 3.0 is just the web rediscovering its roots. Web 2.0 is an aberration whose initial promise ultimately failed to deliver, creating Tech Bros instead.

@austinginder Love this concept, similar to repo-health scoring initiatives elsewhere. Would love to chat about surfacing some of the data in fair.pm for use in assigning a Trust Score with shared objectives in supply chain security. Hit me up via DM if you're open!

@Rarst It's even worse. When Matt went nuclear on WPE, I said yep, that's the natural outcome of 5ftf - saw it in 2014 & actually surprised it took so long. The only way to "fix" it is to just kill it. It's a fundamental attack on Freedom 0 of the GPL.

5 for the future was a poor idea from the start, because (as usual) it focused on extracting labor, not advancing project. for companies it incentivized optics, for contributors it reinforced that if you aren't worth it for the PR, the only price point WP welcomes you at is free.

@zamoose @photomatt That doesn't sound right, don't think that was Linus. HG is not a spiritual successor to SVN; its architecture is more similar to Git than SVN, but Linus still believes Git to be the better tool. SVN was the spiritual successor to CVS, which Linus hated with a passion (his words)

@photomatt IIRC Linus said something about "If I'd known Mercurial was in the works, I wouldn't have bothered with Git". Hg was the spiritual successor to SVN and was (and technically, still is?) miles more user-friendly and just all-around a nicer tech. Shame Git won.

SVN is seen as so passé in standard tech circles I am afraid to admit this, but the other day I came across the SVN book, not updated since 2011, and I really miss it. Read this foreword: svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.7/svn.for…

Version control like "git" is just creating more work for everyone involved. There is no reason for this to be so complicated, convoluted, opaque, and behaving like it knows best. It should not require the user to know a billion commands and "tricks" to use. It's unscalable.

@jamesckemp @photomatt Centralized control. Of course, you have to view that as an actual benefit -- but that's why I say SVN was built for the Cathedral, while Git was built for the Bazaar.

I didn't know that! Of course, this means I have to figure out a way to make something that lets SVN lovers enjoy all the fun social features of GitHub. :) Let me know if anyone else wants to work on that.

@photomatt Linus hated SVN, which is why the kernel's "version control" at that time was devs emailing patches to one another. He refused any version control system that wasn't designed for distributed work, which is why he created git. SVN was designed for the Cathedral, not the bazaar.

Now that Artemis II has launched we have 10 days to get everyone on Earth a Planet of the Apes costume so we can do something hilarious when the astronauts return 😁

@BOSSportsGordo It's easier to manoeuvre with rear-wheel steering, especially if you don't have an optimal approach. This is why forklifts are designed that way: you get a tighter turning radius.

Wish I were going to @Press__Conf too!
GREYD@greyd_suite

Most WordPress events reward the people comfortable on stage. @Press__Conf is built around the conversations that happen when the cameras are off. Our CEO Mark Weisbrod and COO / CMO Sandra Kurze will be in Tempe, Arizona, April 8 to 11. Whether you're scaling a WordPress agency, rethinking how your team delivers projects, or trying to grow without adding complexity to your stack, those are the discussions they're there for. PressConf keeps its sessions unrecorded by design. The organizers are explicit about it: the format exists so industry leaders can say things in that room they wouldn't say on stage. Anyone who has sat through a conference panel knows how much that changes the conversation. If agency growth, product strategy, or the business side of WordPress is on your agenda for 2026, let's talk! #WordPress #PressConf #AgencyGrowth
