"So Bright the Vision" (1956) by Simak - a story about writers of future reduced to operators of writing machines, a desperate struggling (cheap machine) writer breaks into office of successful one to use his superb customized machine... to find it broken and unused. pertinent.

In WordPress, you can go from valued community member to persona non grata overnight. Not for sabotage. For suggesting the project should be led differently. I wrote about what that does to an ecosystem: coenjacobs.com/blog/fear-voic…

✨ We built WP Composer — an independent, open source Composer repository for WordPress plugins and themes, with 17x faster cold resolves than WPackagist wp-composer.com

@ZenoPopovici you mix up transitioning core to Composer (which no one even bothers to suggest) with adding Composer support to infrastructure (which is exactly what WPackagist in question does). one doesn't get to lock down and ignore infrastructure needs, then complain others don't.

It’s not that simple. I’ve worked on that the entire system is stuck in time (early 2000s) it’s using svn and it would be nontrivial to rewrite it all. Also versioning is not implemented in many plugins themselves (even if we have it in SVN). It’s a huge undertaking. I will also most likely break old plugins as the whole loading of plugins would have to be replaced. Half measures could be done but it wouldn’t be better.

@ZenoPopovici Composer repository format is open and trivial to implement, it can't be owned. WP infrastructure (aka Matt's private site) ignoring it was a choice and had zero to do with backwards compat. I wouldn't be surprised if repos urgently get Composer compat just to spite WPE now.

Nope. It was a design philosophy intended to keep backwards compatibility for all times. If you would develop a plugin now it should work forever. You might disagree with this but it wasn’t malicious. Maybe this should change now. But that’s another story. Also others have picked up this and composer flows can work seamlessly. But now the packaging system used by composer will be privately owned and that sucks.

@ihorvorotnov not accepting job for any reason that's important for you is fine, making uppity remarks about a company over (by far) most used desktop operating system is a clown behavior

WPackagist has been acquired by @wpengine. For over a decade, Outlandish built and maintained this service. Now WP Engine is carrying it forward - with the same commitment to the developer community in the WordPress ecosystem.

"...they needed to install Node.js, npm, Git, Docker Desktop, understand the command line, configure a local WordPress environment, install VS Code extensions, set up a plugin from scratch..." how did _WordPress_, of all, came to this DX I'll never understand (or rather accept)

@Rarst It does seem like it’s maybe a kink. I don’t think consumers care that much anymore, so it’s just Intel paying computer companies to debase themselves for lulz. “And use really permanent glue. Yeah. You like that, don’t you?”
