If you are familiar with Malaysia, you'd likely know that Malaysia has this unique tradition that during the CNY period, celebrities, KOLs and brands alike would be producing all kind of Chinese New Year songs, and most of them are really good. I even hear good compliments from some friends in China that they aren't even that big in CNY. Well, my wife and my son also love them (they are big on festivals), so goes without saying they would be bombarding the house and the cars with this song. Well, since i've been experimenting vibe-coding recent months, i thought this is a perfect opportunity for another quick project, so i gave myself one night to build a Web App for us all to vote on our best CNY Songs - 大马贺岁金曲榜. Having the past experience, i'd imagine it to be easier, but that was the first wrong. I had struggled to produce theme/UI that i likes, and have them being consistent. After much fighting (made worse by my own conflicting theme guidelines) i finally get to something that i like. From here on, it's not too difficult, i mange to implement several features that i like - Live leaderboard! - The leader board would move up/down based on voting by users in realtime - Social share poster generator - Dynamically generate share posters to be shared in Instagram - User submissions - User & myself would submit just a YouTube link and all metadata will be fetch and inserted automatically for voting - Lazy-load Youtube Views Count - Since i wanted to be able to see which song is actually ranking higher in view counts, i wanted to extract this from YouTube, but without using the difficult Youtube Data API. And because the view counts does not show up in public metadata, i'd have to crawl them, but lazily upon user vote action and ensure last sync > x hours. I think this is a rather interesting project, why don't you check it out and cast your vote too! damahesui.my

Has anyone tried "vibe-security-audit" project codebase? It sounded stupid and legitimate at the same time. Probably going to experiment with it and share here.

@yicaichina A cool idea actually. Something so simple (and morbidly named 😂) blew up with minimal dev cost. Inspired me to vibe-code a quick PWA take on it yesterday, full Stripe + push notifs in ~7 hours. Thread with the build story if anyone's curious: x.com/vinlim/status/…

The brings me to one of the point that i've been contemplating. I've been a long time web developer (Some of you would also likely know that i'm a long time tech speaker, mostly on web technology), and in the earlier AI days, the general consensus was that AI can quickly replace a junior dev. However, as the models gets more advance, and with powerful MCPs that complete the entire develop-test-feedback loop, many tech-savvy individuals can now be very potent developers as well. And as this goes on, i can imagine software/code are essentially commodity, do we still code? I run a small dev-shop, so that brings me to another question, what are our value in the near-to-mid term. What i essentially did today isn't just code. I was basically the PM, the UI Designer, the Copywriter, and the QA, all in one afternoon 🌚 The AI didn't just replace a junior dev; it replaced an agency. (yes, not now/immediately) Not only that, testing a silly idea like this in the past would probably cost 2~3 weeks of weekends?. Now, the "cost" is just one afternoon. This changes the landscape, we can imagine (or already seeing) a flood of softwares/saas/pico-sass and how would the market react? I don't have all the answers, but one thing for sure, dev-shop like myself would need to evolve, with different game plan. Perhaps one-man shop with many agents? or focus on product & strategy? Either way, our value can no longer be just execution. If you are interested in the app, check out dahmati.com

A Chinese app called "Are You Dead," or "死了么" in Chinese, has attracted widespread attention online after topping the paid chart on the App Store in China. Designed for people living alone, the app automatically sends an email to notify users' emergency contacts if they fail to check in for several straight days. Three developers made the app for just over CNY1,000 (USD143) in less than a month, Jiemian News reported on Jan. 10.

An app with one button and the name «Are you dead yet?» made hundreds of thousands of dollars The app 死了么 went super viral in China. One function: - daily check-in with a single button - if the user doesn’t check in for 2 days, a selected contact gets notified Built by a team of three developers, all born in ’95. Why it took off: - the number of people living alone in China is growing fast - the provocative name shocks and sparks discussion - ultra-simple mechanics – one button, nothing extra Revenue: - paid app: ¥8 ($1.10) - no subscriptions - realistically: 300–500k downloads - revenue: $380k–$770k Not bad for a three-person team. Would you build a copy?

@CoateDan It's a silly and fun but it also seems to have legitimate need for solo-dwellers, especially in the East asia. It's something unfamiliar to me as well, so i went ahead to build one to validate.

China’s top paid app is called “Are You Dead?” It pings you to prove you’re still alive and alerts a contact if you don’t respond. That’s not tech progress, it’s social collapse. Isolation, declining families, and quiet despair made into an app. 😢💀😵

Earlier, I read about a viral app in China called "死了吗?" (Are You Dead?), and again in South China Morning Post & BBC. It is essentially an app that let user check-in every 2 days to avoid their predefined contact receive a notification about them.. not being alive. Since i have been experimenting with vibe-coding lately, i decided to fully vibe-code this app to see how far it can go. Turns out, it's actually way beyond my expectation. I spent about ~7 hours from concept to completion, not just MVP but fully functional app. From the more obvious stuff like DB, backend services & front-end to comprehensive stuff like - A consistent UI Design & Branding - Full compliant Installable/A2HS PWA with custom install prompt banner that's conditional to user device - Web Push Notification onboarding, and reminder push - Feature-gating for freemium business model, and Stripe integration - Mixpanel integration with custom events
