If you're a minor online who is in a close relationship (romantic or platonic) with an adult please read: Tw: grooming, pedophilia First of all, I'm not here to shame you or make you feel guilty, but rather to share a story and if you do see yourself in this then please reach out to your parents, a teacher or a friend. I promise you there are people who care about you, you are not alone. You see all of these stories online, of other teenagers who come across predators, who get groomed and manipulated. But you think that's not you. You're smarter than that. You're old enough to know better than them. You aren't a victim because everything you do is your own choice and you are fully in control. And to a certain extent parts of that might've been true, but this is the mindset that exposes you to danger. Groomers don't start out with the red flags. It starts harmless, you have a friend group, you just play a few games together but eventually you two always end up being the only people in that call. Late at night when everyone else has gone to bed you start opening up about your struggles and your feelings. He can relate, of course he's been through the same when he was your age. You're friends, just normal friends with this age gap. And you start growing into more. "You are special" He makes you feel like you're equal to him, in this relationship there is no power dynamic. He doesn't say "you're mature for your age" he says he "doesn't view you as a child". He says "you and I we get along so well, we're on the same wave length" He makes you feel seen and understood in a way that *they* never could. "We shouldn't tell them. They wouldn't understand" Part of you knows why they wouldn't understand. But *you* understand, *you* know what you have is different to the stories you see online because you have this close bond, you have known him for so long now. "He's not isolating me" Slowly but surely you start talking less to your friends, he doesn't forbid it because why would he? He isn't trying to shut you off, no. He just wants to spend more alone time. *You* choose to speak less to your friends because *you* also want to spend more alone time. They are worried. They ask about you and him, why you two never play with them anymore. "Is everything okay?" Yes? Why would it not be okay? After all *you* are choosing him. He was right, they don't understand. Eventually your dynamic changes, but you haven't realized yet. He starts being more demanding. You go from "Let's spend some alone time" to "You don't wanna play today? You don't love me? Am I not good enough?" He starts making you feel bad. Bad about yourself, about the way you treat him. And you think "no, he's not "making" you feel bad, he's just sharing his feelings. Because he trusts you, right? He's not one of *them*". You're relativating everything he says. Those thoughts keep circling in your head but you never fully give in to them, because all of this has been *your* choice all along. Fast forward a few years: It's over. You ended up breaking free but at what cost? You're the same age as him now. The thought of finding someone that age attractive is repellent to you. You finally understand. Just a few years ago I thought that I could be a victim. Please don't be like me In this story I've been talking about a *him*, but it's worth mentioning that grooming isn't gender specific, minors of any age, gender or sexuality can fall victim to anyone. The problem with groomers isn't that they appear threatening, they are kind to you, they will offer you comfort and what feels like a safe space. But it isn't. It's manipulation, of course it doesn't feel wrong to you because they are trying to make it feel right. Deep down you know that and you need to listen to this voice at the back of your head that is questioning all of it. Anyone who tells you to "not tell anyone" is ashamed and embarassed. Someone who wants to keep you a secret KNOWS it's wrong. There IS a power dynamic. Whether you realize it or not, whether you FEEL it or not, there IS one. And I know coming to terms with the fact that someone you're so close with is a predator is what is SO difficult. But that is the first step. You aren't stupid for falling for it, you're not at fault. You have the power to get out of this and you have people who will support you step by step. You aren't alone, there are people who understand you, who will listen to you without trying to get more out of you. You are loved, you are valuable and you are deserving of better. That person who's 4(+) years older than you is not your friend. Grooming is so dangerous because doesn't FEEL dangerous to a victim.
