@leftistwhatever fwiw I think Greta's perspective on the Cuba embargo is much more defensible because, indeed, energy shortages cause humanitarian crises and that's bad. But the fact that even Cuban Americans are strongly divided on the embargo demonstrates that there's a bit more to it than that

@leftistwhatever Unfortunately I think a lot of otherwise educated people have been delivered a very myopic view of history that ignores the *billions* of lives saved by the energy abundance enabled by fossil fuels, including the fact that this energy has almost entirely mitigated climate dangers

In the future I think it will look very strange and arguably abusive for the world to canonize a neurodivergent child whose serious mental health conditions make it extremely difficult to tolerate a knowledge of global problems without self-harming
Daniel Turner@DanielTurnerPTF

Greta Thunberg in 2023: If we don't end fossil fuels, it will be a "death sentence." Greta Thunberg in 2026: President Trump must allow oil imports to Cuba. I guess the "climate crisis" has negotiable deadlines.

I also get criticized fairly often for having anti-natalist takes that are actually just an honest accounting of how challenging parenting can be, and I think Erica Komisar lays out the rebuttal best here
Diane Yap@RealDianeYap

I like Romy's content but I wonder if she realizes how potently anti-natalist most of her descriptions of son are. She has expressed concern about the birthrate, but I bet most people reading her posts conclude "That sounds awful, I definitely don't want that."

@Romy_Holland tbh in *some* cases motherhood at 20-22 is fine, maybe even ideal, the issue is finding and discerning a great husband If he's not selfish or a layabout, college is arguably a great time to have a baby. On-campus childcare usually punches way above its class for what it costs

my 17yo SIL is amazing with the baby and completely obsessed with him. she’s college-bound and i’m not advocating she become a teen mom, but it just doesn’t seem that crazy to imagine her as a mom. she’s super sweet and energetic and responsible. i think the type of person who currently becomes a teen mom is particularly poorly suited for it, and therefore our concept of a teen mom is particularly bad.

@harryh @aussieflya With basement/attic apartments afaict there are generally some code violations that the city would consider hazardous wrt fire/flood, with new builds probably not

As far as I can tell, you're genuinely better off renting an illegal conversion off the books in NYC than doing any of this You might get a $15,000 fine, but at least the city will force your tenant out rather than enable a 3-4+ year eviction boondoggle with a 6-figure price tag
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani@NYCMayor

If you own a home with a basement, attic, or backyard, chances are you’ve thought about using it to earn a little extra income or as space for a loved one. We want to make it as easy (and affordable) as possible for you to do that. NYC recently legalized ADUs — but for too many New Yorkers, they’re still tied up in bureaucracy and expense. We're fixing that. Our new toolkit at nyc.gov/aduforyou includes preapproved building plans and a financing calculator so you can get right to building. If we want New York to remain a city for everyone, we have to make it easier for homeowners to stay here. ADU for You will do just that.

@uncatherio Like, figuring out how to do stuff with your kids without getting bored is absolutely mom-friend stuff, I think people are literally just worse at having and being friends now

@uncatherio It doesn't sound like that's what happened here at all, though! They spent a lot of time together doing activities with the kids, but when an actual bond was required to carry things beyond the superficial (temporary but serious illness), their intimacy collapsed

I read this article twice to try to understand how non-monogamy could possibly be a childcare hack, and afaict the answer is "if you let your husband have sex with other people, he'll have to let you have sex with other people, which means he'll agree to watch the kids sometimes"
Leah Libresco Sargeant@LeahLibresco

Begging people to remember you can have *friends* "For these moms, non-monogamy seems to offer more than just a way to reclaim their libido. Could it also be the secret to raising kids without completely resenting one’s husband?" thecut.com/article/non-mo…

@uncatherio To Leah's point, nothing about their relationship sounds like it actually required them to be more than good friends, and the fact that it didn't remain that way is what made it ultimately unsustainable when life got in the way

@webdevMason The Emily/Laura romance comes through clearly. They’re both women and help with one another’s kids. I’ve long felt my own experience of attraction to women was basically reproductively-driven in exactly this way.

Half the article actually seems to be about moms getting into sexual relationships with people who eventually leave them because the kids create logistical problems they don't want to deal with, which seems, um, soul-crushing?

Perhaps your husband should just watch the kids sometimes so you can do something without the kids now and then idk

@I_Secretum_Am It's not that I'm super into slavery but it feels like the most proportionate justice, in that stealing the money a working person exchanged their years of labor for is equivalent to stealing their labor

@webdevMason There are many ways financial reward and punishment could be handled here, I'd favor a way that involved less slavery.

@webdevMason you'd expose the victim to her abuser again? Perhaps there's a insurance solution here too.

@leamaric tbh I have a reflexive "expel the harlot" mental posture toward this, not because of what she's wearing specifically or even her smugness but because this specific attitude says this woman is interested in ruining a family to prove something to herself

I love how zoomers seem to think it’s totally normal to walk around with their bare midriffs showing in the middle of the day in public. Like, no… anyway, here’s the attention you ordered!
