This is how high rent kills a city: one small business at a time. Beloved mom-and-pop cafe, named after Edgar Allan Poe, where the owner is always happy to see you—unless you're mean to the waitress, in which case he'll throw you out. Irreplaceable. westsiderag.com/2026/04/02/upp…

This article oddly omits the single most important fact needed to make or not make this point, employment. As it happens, Wall Street employment in NYC has shrunk over the past year and is below its peak of a quarter-century ago. All sustained growth in the sector has been outside of NYC. Here is a graph here from a 2025 state comptroller report. (Link to the report in next post.) ft.com/content/5d2e68…

2018 At the same time, for-hire drivers would see a significant spike in fees by way of a new, annual $2,000 license charge. All TLC drivers currently pay a $252 license fee every three years and for-hire drivers also pay a $550 vehicle license every 2 years on top of that

2018 The bill directly targets ride-hail workers. It would ban drivers from operating for more than one ride-hail company —a widely practiced approach drivers use to get extra cash by filling gaps in their shifts while also restricting them to being affiliated with just one base
