Because my entire English ancestry is from Southampton. I don’t have a problem with people supporting whoever they want to, I’m simply saying we don’t relate to each other. My fiance is Irish. I will probably move to Dublin in the next couple of years, but I’m not Irish. That’s not to say there’s anything good or bad about the UK or Ireland - I’m just… not Irish 🤷‍♂️ Southampton Football Club, shite as they have been to support for the past decade, is simply a part of who I am far more than Arsenal or Liverpool or whoever is for someone who’s plucked them off the shelf with no connection to the area.

To clarify - you can support who you like - but if I ask you who you support and you say “QPR”, “Preston North End”, “Plymouth Argyle” or even “Middlesbrough” with an accent that reflects those areas, my face will light up and we’ll both know real recognises real. If I hear “Arsenal” or “Liverpool” and you’re not from there - I’ll just kinda glaze over and we can talk about something other than football. It’s all cool but we’re not the same.

I’m half Polish. The entire English side of my family is from Southampton. I spent summers with grandparents down there. I didn’t choose Southampton any more than I chose my family, my ethnicity, my gender. If you “chose” a team to support, then you wouldn’t get it. If you’re from Islington, then fair play - must be nice.

I just can’t relate to people who don’t support their local club or the club from the city they’re connected to. How can you sing “North London forever” when you’re not from North London? It’d be like me putting on a France shirt and singing the French national anthem.
