@BethRigby I remember when a gain of 58 seats in the local election was enough to cause “doubts” And here you are doing client journalism on a 2000 seat loss Absolute joke of a journalist

Where are Labour tonight? - PM is going to come out fighting on a Friday. Knows it’s going to be difficult and painful and will take responsibility for that. No glib ‘it’s mid-terms, nothing to see here’ Work over next 72/96 hours will be about persuading party to stick with him and pull together - Starmer making it clear he is not going anywhere, and has a mandate from voters. Will not set out a timetable for departure & rejects those calls - Sense in top circles things have calmed down a little in recent days. Rayner & Streeting will not make direct challenge to Starmer and soft left seems to be settling on trying to get Burnham back. Significant @LucyMPowell told me in interview on Weds she supports Starmer whatever happens in these elections and he right leader for change agenda. She also said she wants Burnham back in Parliament. Burnham meanwhile was due to attend an event in Manchester tomorrow morning but has pulled out - perhaps given the noise around him - It’s going to be a very difficult and emotional day as Labour lose perhaps up to 2000 councillors and control of the Senedd. But hope is from Starmer allies is he’ll have a little more time to try to get on with the ‘change’ he promised country. He expected to make a speech arguing the world has changed and UK needs to make a new framework for the country- around energy security, defence and economy - with a big focus on more opportunities for young people. Will it be enough? No 10 bracing for some junior ministerial resignations but hope is party settles on keeping him in place with perhaps party conference being the next big test moment. No 10 knows polling has to improve. Starmer helped here by no agreement on successor or timing/manner of departure BUT also true that pretty much every MP I ask privately says he can’t fight the next election & when results land it’s going to really hurt. Even is survives it’s going to feel very much a stay of execution

Through a combination of lies, cupidity, toxic politics and the demeanor of a mid-sized rodent, Keir Starmer has utterly destroyed the Labour Party. The job of the next 3 years is to push that smoking wreckage aside and make way for a proper left politics. Otherwise it’s fascism.

@owenjonesjourno so the greens could learn from this maybe and stop being little dumbasses in places where independents with similar projects could win?

Oof. Disastrous result in Newham’s mayoral election. The combined independent and Green vote was about 39,000. But a split vote means Labour won with 25,538 votes.

This is worthy of Orban’s Hungary: if you run an arts organisation, you had better support the ruling party – or else we will give you a monstering in the regime-friendly press

New Green Hackney Mayor Zoe Garbett got 1 minute and 30 seconds into her victory speech before mentioning “genocide”. When will politicians acknowledge that lying about Israel is putting British Jews in harm’s way.

Hahahaha BBC News went straight from the Hackney Mayor result to Steve Reed, who promptly started pontificating about antisemitic Greens. They don't have a fucking clue.

This is the same Labour MP who was sending late-night tweets to Glastonbury demanding they ban acts that support Palestine. His sole mission in parliament seems to be censoring artists who criticise Israel or Keir Starmer.

Only chance Labour has now is recognising its left-wing base has gone to the Greens and shifting left in response. Instead Labour will chase Reform voters who’ll never vote for them, primarily as Labour is controlled by people who are pathologically opposed to anything left-wing

For too long we have tolerated an acquiescence of antisemitism used to isolate and discriminate against the Jewish Community. My role is to ensure that government & civil society apply the values of freedom that our country stands for. My speech to @CST_UK youtu.be/h8DEljBkDFk

Labour strategists: “We have lost a lot of voters to Reform, showing we didn’t adopt enough of their policy & rhetoric, and we have also lost a lot of voters to the Greens, showing we didn’t scream hard enough at them that they’re all traitors, terrorists, racists & fools.”

The BBC cuts back to the studio from Zoes speech and how does Steve Reed respond? With smears. The Labour right has nothing to offer the people of Hackney, and nothing to offer the country.
