Where are Labour tonight?
- PM is going to come out fighting on a Friday. Knows it’s going to be difficult and painful and will take responsibility for that. No glib ‘it’s mid-terms, nothing to see here’ Work over next 72/96 hours will be about persuading party to stick with him and pull together
- Starmer making it clear he is not going anywhere, and has a mandate from voters. Will not set out a timetable for departure & rejects those calls
- Sense in top circles things have calmed down a little in recent days. Rayner & Streeting will not make direct challenge to Starmer and soft left seems to be settling on trying to get Burnham back. Significant @LucyMPowell told me in interview on Weds she supports Starmer whatever happens in these elections and he right leader for change agenda. She also said she wants Burnham back in Parliament. Burnham meanwhile was due to attend an event in Manchester tomorrow morning but has pulled out - perhaps given the noise around him
- It’s going to be a very difficult and emotional day as Labour lose perhaps up to 2000 councillors and control of the Senedd. But hope is from Starmer allies is he’ll have a little more time to try to get on with the ‘change’ he promised country. He expected to make a speech arguing the world has changed and UK needs to make a new framework for the country- around energy security, defence and economy - with a big focus on more opportunities for young people.
Will it be enough? No 10 bracing for some junior ministerial resignations but hope is party settles on keeping him in place with perhaps party conference being the next big test moment. No 10 knows polling has to improve.
Starmer helped here by no agreement on successor or timing/manner of departure BUT also true that pretty much every MP I ask privately says he can’t fight the next election & when results land it’s going to really hurt. Even is survives it’s going to feel very much a stay of execution

@BethRigby I remember when a gain of 58 seats in the local election was enough to cause “doubts”
And here you are doing client journalism on a 2000 seat loss
Absolute joke of a journalist

@owenjonesjourno so the greens could learn from this maybe and stop being little dumbasses in places where independents with similar projects could win?

For too long we have tolerated an acquiescence of antisemitism used to isolate and discriminate against the Jewish Community. My role is to ensure that government & civil society apply the values of freedom that our country stands for. My speech to @CST_UK

All four are antisemitic. Which is precisely why removing Green Party extremist candidates is necessary.

Yes, congrats on the Green vote gain in Wandsworth which has handed the council back to the Tories! Well done!

Labour holding up fairly well in Wandsworth as I expected. Greens making good gains in vote share considering we weren't targeting Wandsworth, we'll have to wait and see if it holds and if it turns into seats.

@pengersxi @mattzarb Boris Johnson.
David Cameron.
Liz Truss.
Get a grip and stop enabling Reform.

@timetoshine1234 @mattzarb you would rather wear a swastika than share a modicum of wealth. the only danger here is you and you need to be smashed down

🚨 WATCH: Keir Starmer says he will not "walk away" and "plunge the country into chaos" "These results reflect voters who don't feel their lives have changed enough. We were elected to do with that - and I'm not going to walk away from that"
English

@SaulStaniforth @ZackPolanski he could tell him to fuck off as well, which is the proper answer here
