We remember the three killed and those injured after three nail bombing attacks in London, in 1999. On 17 April 1999, British neo-Nazi terrorist David Copeland perpetrated a nail bombing in Brixton, injuring 50. On 24 April 1999, he carried-out a second nail bombing in Brick Lane, injuring 6. On 30 April 1999, he committed the third and final nail bombing at the Admiral Duncan Pub in Soho, killing 3 people and injuring over 70. Copeland is currently serving six life sentences for three counts of murder and three counts of causing explosions in London in order to endanger life. CST helped to identify David Copeland to police, thanks to the work of an informant who had infiltrated far-right groups in a joint operation between CST and Searchlight.

The stabbing attack in Golders Green this morning that injured two Jewish people has now been declared a terrorist incident by Counter Terrorism Policing. This is the second declared terrorist attack on Britain’s Jewish community in seven months, following the Islamist terror attack at Heaton Park Synagogue in October in which Melvin Cravitz and Adrian Daulby were tragically killed. There have also been several arson attacks on Jewish premises and property in London in recent weeks. We pay tribute to everyone who responded so bravely this morning and we will be increasing security measures even further, working with our partners in the police and government, in the coming days. This series of violent attacks on the Jewish community is unprecedented and completely unacceptable. It is an affront to our country and to our British way of life and every effort must be made, by all parts of society, to combat it.

We remember those who were killed and injured during the attack at the Chabad of Poway Synagogue, San Diego, 2019. The college student entered the synagogue with a firearm and brutally took the life of one congregant and injured three others, including a rabbi and an 8-year-old girl. He is currently serving a sentence of life imprisonment without parole. This attack is another reminder of why communal security, regular training and situational awareness are an essential part of CST’s security operation.

We remember the 269 people killed and 500 people injured after the eight suicide bombing attacks in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, 2019. An Islamic State-linked terrorist cell perpetrated eight suicide bombing attacks (person borne IEDs) in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday. The first seven took place in the space of 20 minutes. The attacks targeted three churches and four luxury hotels, killing about 269 and injuring 500. National Tawheed Jamaat, a local salafi-jihadi group, was behind the attack, and ISIS claimed responsibility. The bombers’ devices were packed with iron nails, ball bearings and TATP.

We are aware of another attempted arson, this time targeting a synagogue in north London, following similar recent incidents targeting the Jewish community in Finchley, Golders Green and Hendon. On this occasion there was minor smoke damage to an internal room, but there were no injuries and no significant structural damage. We want to thank the @metpoliceuk, @LondonFire and our CST team for responding quickly and for all they are doing to protect the Jewish community during this unprecedented period. We are supporting the affected location and are working closely with the police as they investigate and seek to identify those responsible. We urge people to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity, at any time of day or night, to the police immediately on 999 and then to CST.

We are grateful to the @metpoliceuk and @TerrorismPolice for their work investigating these appalling arson attacks and we are encouraged that there have been further arrests. We understand that this is a concerning time for the Jewish community, as it is for everybody, and we urge people to remain calm, stay vigilant, and continue reporting any suspicious behaviour immediately to the police on 999, and then to CST. These investigations are a stark reminder of the very real threat we face and are the reason why security measures remain so high.

On this day, we remember the 19 people killed in a suicide vehicle bombing outside El-Ghriba Synagogue in Djerba, Tunisia, 2002. A Tunisian al-Qaeda (AQ) operative drove a truck with liquid propane into the synagogue’s outer wall. The explosion injured 30 victims and killed 19, including 16 German and French tourists. El-Ghriba Synagogue is one of the oldest synagogues in Africa and the site of an annual pilgrimage that attracts thousands of visitors each year. An AQ spokesman claimed responsibility two months later. The attack was AQ’s first external international attack following 9/11. CST has an extensive security operation in place to secure Jewish communal buildings.
