For the first time ever, the most famous American in the world is not the president or a Hollywood icon or tech billionaire—it’s the Pope. This is more than a Catholic triumph; it’s a cultural watershed for the United States. In a society that often equates American influence with might or money or celebrity, now our foremost representative on the global stage is a humble man in a white cassock, preaching love, justice, and mercy. Here is the Lenten question for today: Where are you absent? Not physically — you are probably standing in the right rooms, sitting at the right tables. But where have you withdrawn your attention, your responsibility, your care? Where have you let proximity substitute for presence? I fail at this constantly. My phone pulls me out of the room while my body stays put. I rehearse tomorrow’s obligations while sitting at tonight’s dinner table. Joseph convicts me because his faithfulness was not a single dramatic act — it was daily, ordinary, and total. The Gospel today does not record Joseph’s words because his whole life was the word. He said yes through his labor, his presence, and a willingness to remain when the future was unclear. thelettersfromleo.com/p/the-saint-wh…

EXCLUSIVE - Hegseth said today that “family after family” of the service members killed in the Iran war told him: “Finish this. Honor their sacrifice. Do not waver. Do not stop until the job is done.” But a father who met with Hegseth tells @Petereporter he never said that

He’s quoting historian Will Durant to the effect that this is the way of the world. History is a record of conquest, and might typically prevails regardless of who is right. Christianity is in full agreement that Satan is the prince of this world and his side often prevails.

Benjamin Netanyahu says Jesus Christ has no advantage over Genghis Khan. Netanyahu says that if you are strong enough, ruthless enough, and powerful enough, “evil will overcome good.” What's your message to Benjamin Netanyahu?

NEW: Pope Leo XIV just called for universal healthcare, saying health shouldn't be “a luxury for the few.” This comes as four million Americans lost their ACA subsidies after congressional Republicans refused to extend them at the urging of the Trump-Vance White House. thelettersfromleo.com/p/pope-leo-xiv…

That sounds like Tierneyism — not Catholicism. Here’s what our faith teaches. “It should be presupposed that every good Christian ought to be more eager to put a good interpretation on a neighbor’s statement than to condemn it. “Further, if one cannot interpret it favorably, one should ask how the other means it. “If that meaning is wrong, one should correct the person with love; if this is not enough, one should search out every  appropriate means through which, by understanding the statement in a good way, it may be saved.” — Spiritual Exercises 22

Something Catholics (and honestly anyone) should think of more: The benefit of the doubt isn't automatic. Leaders do not receive the benefit of the doubt because they are leaders. They receive it because they project trustworthiness.

Days after Pete Hegseth said the U.S. war in Iran is protected by God, Pope Leo XIV denounced those who “involve the name of God in choices of death.” “At the moment in the world, many of our brothers and sisters suffer because of violent conflicts, caused by the absurd desire to solve the problems and the divergences with the war, while it is necessary to dialogue without hesitation for peace. “Some then even intend to involve the name of God in these choices of death. But God cannot be ruled by the darkness, and he is rather given light, hope, and peace to humanity, and peace that those who invoke him must seek.”
