From colleague Bill Melugin. Dem TX Rep Escobar: Today, accusations were made against one of my caseworkers — a dedicated public servant, Army veteran, and experienced member of my team. I have every reason to believe these allegations are unfounded.
It is worth noting that ICE has refused to respond to multiple letters I’ve sent about Camp East Montana regarding deaths, including a homicide; outbreaks of diseases including COVID-19, measles, and tuberculosis; waste, fraud, and abuse; a lack of legal representation or medical care; and so much more.
This administration has a history of engaging in intimidation tactics against Members of Congress as well as continuously attempting to obstruct our ability to provide oversight.
I stand proudly by the members of my team who have demonstrated nothing but dedication and integrity to serving our nation and our community.

Top Dem on Apps Cmte DeLauro on $200 billion spending request for war in Iran: With no clear objective, no apparent strategy, and no end in sight, the Trump Administration reportedly wants another $200 billion from American taxpayers to fund the war he chose to start.
We are in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis that is hurting Americans who were already living paycheck to paycheck. Nearly everything is more expensive and if this war is prolonged, the cost-of-living crisis will only worsen – from gas prices to groceries. The American people are overwhelmingly opposed to this war. They do not want more tax dollars to be spent on war in the Middle East.
If the Trump Administration wants this money, they should pay for it by reversing the trillions of dollars in tax breaks for the wealthy and large corporations they enacted last year.
This administration is not prioritizing the American people. President Trump called the affordability crisis a hoax, but we know that is not true. Job prospects are few and far between, prices keep climbing, and millions have already lost access to their healthcare because of Republican refusal to act.
Democrats will continue fighting to bring down costs for working families. President Trump and Republicans can join us or ignore the priorities of the American people by spending billions on endless, deadly wars. The choice is theirs.

DHS: On March 18, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Todd M. Lyons sent Texas Rep. Veronica Escobar a letter detailing how one of her staff members repeatedly lied and misrepresented himself as an attorney to illegally gain access to ICE detention facilities on at least 11 occasions. Rep. Escobar’s staffer, Benito Torres, attested to being an attorney or an “accredited representative appearing before EOIR on immigration matters,” claiming to possess a signed Form G-28, Notice of Entry of Appearance as Attorney or Accredited Representative.
He also passed out a cellphone to multiple detainees, despite being made aware that personal phones are not permitted during detainee visits.
“The available evidence demonstrates your staffer, a senior caseworker named Benito Torres, misrepresented himself as counsel for detainees in ICE custody, violated clear detention standards and security protocols prohibiting the use of cellphones inside ICE facilities, improperly met with multiple detainees, and falsely claimed to ICE personnel such use had been approved by the agency,” Director Todd Lyons wrote. “As a result of bringing a cell phone into the Camp East Montana facility, contrary to facility visitation policy, Mr. Torres’ misrepresentation that he is a licensed attorney to gain access to detainees, his improper meetings with groups of detainees, and his assertions to ICE personnel about the origins of his visit, Mr. Torres is hereby prohibited from accessing any ICE facility.”
Torres falsely claimed he was a “lawyer” visiting “client[s]” in Camp East Montana’s visitor log on Jan. 30. The facility administrator discovered that Torres was passing a phone to multiple detainees and spoke to him; at that time, Torres admitted he was not an attorney and was visiting as a private citizen. The administrator reiterated the facility’s visitation policies to Torres, who falsely claimed his visit was coordinated through Escobar’s office and ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations headquarters.
After the fraudulent visit, officials reviewed past visitor logs and discovered Torres had repeatedly represented himself as a legal professional or said he was visiting for legal reasons. ICE records show that Torres has misrepresented himself at least 11 times

From colleague Kelly Phares. Thune on DHS talks: We've been encouraging this for a while, and glad to see both sides sitting down and having Homan up here..being a part of that is, I think, a pretty big deal, and our recognition that we need to get this resolved, and it needs to get resolved by the end of next week. I can't see us taking a break if the government is still shut down.

From colleague Laura Garrison. Johnson on $200 billion admin request to pay for the war: It will be detailed and specified. I'm sure it's not a random number, so we'll look at that. But obviously, it's a dangerous time in the world, and we have to adequately fund defense, and we have a commitment to do that.

From colleague Laura Garrison. Johnson on if the US sends ground troops into Iran war: don't think it's a yes or no question, because it all depends on the details of that. We're not declaring war. It's a limited operation. I think the mission is all but complete, so we'll have to see what the details are.
