Christianity teaches God entered history in the flesh. Gnosticism denied the goodness/reality of the incarnation. Exact opposite.

Without God’s Word, you have a concept of who God might be—not the revelation of who He actually is. Pagans were convinced their gods were real too. The one true God revealed Himself through His Word. Jesus is the Word made flesh (John 1:14). Creation reveals that God exists. Scripture reveals who He is.

@number_pizza111 They're also fairly decent indicators of how interpretive-heuristic structures change, and how that informs how questions are raised and how they are assumed to be answerable. An encyclical of, say, Pius XII or Leo XIII isn't handling things the same way as one by Francis.

Papal Encyclicals are incredibly unique if you care about intellectual history. Very few other groups write unambiguous statements answering what they believe, why they believe it, and the intellectual tradition of why they believe it stretching back thousands of years.
