The trick to reducing roadway deaths is actually very simple: slow down the cars. It's the reason densely populated cities like Hoboken and Helsinki have so few traffic fatalities and injuries. Freeways aren't the danger; high speed surface streets are.

Why not Amazon lockers in the NYC subway? Pair them with a coffee kiosk. The barista keeps an eye on the lockers (security solved). The commuter grabs a package and a coffee on the way home. Singapore and Taipei do this. Locker rent plus a cut of coffee sales = new MTA revenue.

Every year or so, my wife and I (*without the kids*) go to NYC for 3-4 nights. The daily itinerary looks something like this: get a coffee, walk, get a few pastries, walk, have a slice of pizza, walk, get some dim sum, walk, go to a museum, get a coffee, take a subway, eat, walk, eat, have a coffee, take a subway, walk. Not a vacation in the traditional sense, but if there's a trip I can do once a year for the rest of my life, it's this.
