When asked about a Bank of America report that found the spike in gas prices has cost consumers $19 billion and cut tax returns by nearly half, White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett says “that analysis is incorrect.”
“Think about it this way: 153 million people have filed taxes already, and the average refund is $3,600,” he says. “53 million people have benefited from no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, no tax on social security…Real incomes are growing, and real incomes, when they adjust for inflation, include the price of energy.”

Too on point not to share, “Aussie reply to Trump rant about NATO not being there for us.
Mate. You run a country with 600,000 homeless people sleeping on the street tonight. A country where 40% of adults can't cover a $400 emergency without borrowing money. A country where insulin costs more than a car payment and people are rationing it to survive. A country where medical debt is the number 1 cause of bankruptcy. A country where women are dying in hospital car parks because doctors are too scared of abortion laws to treat a miscarriage.
You lock up more of your own citizens than any nation on earth. More than China. More than Russia. More than North Korea. The land of the free has 2 million people in cages, and a quarter of them haven't even been convicted of anything. They're just too poor to make bail.
Your life expectancy is going backwards. You're the only developed nation where that's happening. Your infant mortality rate is worse than Cuba's. Your kids do active shooter drills between maths and English while you sell the gunmaker's stock to your mates.
Your minimum wage hasn't moved in 15 years. You've got teachers working 2 jobs and veterans sleeping under bridges and you just spent a trillion dollars flattening a country that didn't attack you.
And you’ve got a convicted felon, adjudicating raping, paedophile protecting, porn star shagging insurrectionist running the biggest dumpster fire war campaign since the Taliban thanked you very much for losing again.
And you're calling Greenland poorly run?
Greenland has universal healthcare. Free education. One of the lowest incarceration rates in the world. Nobody goes bankrupt there because they got sick. Nobody dies in a waiting room because their insurance said no.
"NATO wasn't there when we needed them." When exactly was that, champ? September 11? Because NATO invoked Article 5 for the first and only time in history FOR YOU. Soldiers from dozens of countries deployed, fought, bled, and died in Afghanistan FOR YOU. Australia wasn't even in NATO and we still showed up. For 20 years.
And you pulled out at 2am without telling anyone and left them to deal with the mess.
So maybe before you start calling other countries poorly run, have a look at your own backyard, you spray-tanned aluminium siding salesman. The only thing poorly run in this picture is your fucking mouth. Credit (borrowed from) Jim Scroggins - original author 📷 unknown”

@BeschlossDC At his last inauguration in 1944 everyone was crying.

Dear @kwelkernbc
Please watch this clip. The President of the United States is lying to your face and to your viewers and all you do is nod your head a dozen times while he lies.
No follow up.
No fact checking.
Just your nodding head over and over.

President Trump,
I’ve seen men bleed out in the Ardennes for a flag you’re not fit to hold, let alone wrap yourself in. You think bluster is bravery, but I’ve led men through hell—and you couldn’t march through rain without whining about your hair.
You dodge the draft, praise dictators, and call that strength? Hell, I’ve stared down Rommel’s panzers and pissed in the Rhine. You, on the other hand, ran from bone spurs and hide behind Twitter like a pampered child playing general.
You talk about purging patriots and locking up dissenters like that’s power. That’s not power—it’s cowardice wrapped in a cheap suit and a bad tie.
I fought Nazis. You invite them. I liberated camps. You threaten to build new ones. I defended democracy with a .45 and a tank. You disgrace it with a pen and a podium.
So let me make this crystal clear, sunshine: if you had stood before me in ’44 spouting this treasonous filth, I’d have court-martialed you so fast your gold toilet would’ve flushed itself.
You are a disgrace to the presidency and to this Republic. And if you keep marching this country toward dictatorship, don’t expect history to salute you. It’ll spit.

@jhaskinscabrera @AlachuaChronic1 What solutions are @GainesvilleGov commissioners and @AlachuaCounty commissioners proposing?
English

I don't usually post @AlachuaChronic1's crime stories here, but this one provides a good example of a common occurrence - people who are addicted or mentally ill and are routinely arrested for shoplifting, trespassing, and battery but released because their crimes are low-level misdemeanors. They need mental health treatment and supervision, but we don't know how to do that anymore.
While not every mentally ill homeless person will end up setting someone on fire, their behavior often escalates as they increasingly self-medicate with drugs.
Joshuia Bernard Jenkins, 34, was arrested for shoplifting in Gainesville, FL, on Dec. 15; the arrest was his seventh of 2024.
Jenkins has eight felony convictions (two violent) and 23 misdemeanor convictions (five violent). He has served two state prison sentences, with his most recent release in May 2021. He has been arrested 12 times in Alachua County since May 2021, including seven arrests in 2024. He served a six-month jail sentence in 2023 after being adjudicated guilty for hitting a ninth-grader on a city bus.
He was arrested in February 2024 for trespassing at a convenience store; after entering a plea of nolo contendere, he was fined $376 and released in March, but he has not paid the fine. About two weeks later, a sworn complaint was filed against him for shoplifting cough drops; the officer in that case noted that he seemed to have an intellectual or developmental disability and was unable to answer questions in complete sentences.
In early April, Jenkins was trespassed from the local homeless shelter, and he was arrested in May for sleeping on the basketball court at the shelter; post Miranda, he said he didn’t have anywhere else to go.
In early June, he was referred to Mental Health Court, but Jenkins reportedly declined, saying he was only facing a misdemeanor charge and expected to be released at his next hearing. Two days later, he entered a plea of nolo contendere to the charge and was sentenced to 30 days in jail with credit for 27 days served. He was again fined $376, and that fine has not been paid.
Three days after that court appearance, Jenkins was arrested for shoplifting; he was again referred to Mental Health Court and again declined. On August 7, he was sentenced to two months in jail with credit for 62 days served. He was fined another $376 and has not paid the fine. On that date, he was sentenced to an additional 10 days in jail for the April sworn complaint, with credit for three days served and a fine of $276 that has not been paid.
In early September, Jenkins was arrested for violating a previous trespass order from the University of Florida campus. He was released on his own recognizance on September 23 but failed to make contact with Court Services in the days following his release; a warrant for his arrest was issued, and he was arrested again on October 6 for violating a trespass order at a convenience store. Formal charges were filed in the UF trespassing case on October 22, and then the charges were dropped on December 13, when he entered a plea of nolo contendere to the convenience store trespassing case and was sentenced to 69 days in jail with credit for 60 days served. He was released and then arrested again on December 15.
