It wasn’t. With rare exception, colonies were unprofitable, meaning more was spent building infrastructure like roads, railways, buildings, etc. than was exported. And look at places like Singapore and Hong Kong. Both were colonies for a long time and yet they are extremely prosperous.

Putin's mother won a car in a lottery. His family had to choose: sell it for an apartment, or keep it so he could get to university. They stayed in their one-room communal apartment. She chose her son's future. That's who Putin came from. Putin's mother worked as a hospital janitor after retiring. One day at the cafeteria, they gave her a lottery ticket as change. She won a car, a Zaporozhets. The most basic car you could get in the Soviet Union. The family lived in one room which was so called ommunal apartment with shared kitchen, shared bathroom with other families. Putin had just started university. They sat down to decide what to do. Sell the ticket and buy a cooperative apartment, or keep the car. Putin was sure they'd sell it. Getting out of that single room was the obvious choice for a family living on almost nothing. His mother said: We'll take the car. Let our son drive it. They stayed in that one room so he could have transportation to university. That's who Putin came from. Trump's father was a real estate mogul worth hundreds of millions. Trump grew up in a 23-room mansion, private schools, a reported $413 million inheritance. His first ventures funded with his father's money. He was born into an empire. Americans love to talk about rejecting kings. No monarchy, no aristocracy. But the self-made man is the American Dream. Then they elect someone born into dynastic wealth who lives in a gold-plated penthouse and puts his kids in government positions. And call the guy whose mom worked as a janitor a dictator. But it turns out Putin is the ultimate American Dream story: a self-made man who rose from an ordinary family to become a representative of his people and the leader of his country.

@pati_marins64 Maybe the true problem was that the removed regime was authoritarian but now the cartel has turned into a democracy so no problem anymore? (I’m joking)

Can someone help me think this through? If there was a cartel in Venezuela, and the US removed the cartel's leader but then recognized and kept the entire operational structure of the cartel in place, as long as they follow US orders…. Does that mean the American government is now the one running the cartel? I'm confused…

🇳🇵🗻Welcome to Camp IV on Mount Everest, at nearly 8,000 meters — the highest campsite on Earth Unfortunately, climbers from across the globe leave behind tents, empty oxygen bottles, food cans, damaged gear, and other waste, transforming the world's highest campsite into a graveyard of climbing equipment What do you think should authorities do?

From a population health perspective... What’s the single most important variable when it comes to exercise for healthspan? I write a lot about specific workouts... HIIT vs zone 2, power vs strength, how long, how often, or how hard. And to be fair, once you’re in the game, those variables matter. But… The single biggest factor in whether exercise improves your health is the decision to do something rather than nothing. At the population level, the data is so strong it’s almost silly. Going from nothing to something is where the biggest bang for your buck comes from. -Move daily -Occasionally walk fast -Lift heavy things a few times a week. That's where the massive health gains lie. Not in the optimization, or in the perfect program. It’s all about showing up. Everything I write about after that is fine-tuning. Don’t get me wrong… It’s important fine-tuning— but fine-tuning nonetheless. The gap between doing nothing and doing something is a canyon. The gap between a good program and a perfect one is a crack in the sidewalk. Sweating the details keeps too many on the couch… let’s focus on getting off the couch first.

‼️ Iran's Terms 🔹 retains full control over the Strait of Hormuz 🔹 retains its nuclear and missile programs 🔹 the US military must withdraw from the region I continue to believe the Trump administration will prove unable to swallow this overwhelming strategic humiliation.

@battleforeurope @markeviciute Ukraine is a buffer state that sold its soul for imagined rewards as the tip of the spear of the empire's conquest of Russia. The Baltics are subordinate to their superpower neighbor. The empire could not and will not defend them against Russia. They have made a grave mistake.

@imetatronink I think the US will quietly back down from the conflict while preparing for one last big move some time ahead. Exactly what it did last June in other words. Only this time it's gonna be all in. Whatever that will be..

Color me extremely dubious that Iran is going to consent to American demands sufficiently for the Trump administration to call off the war. The US knows it must do something "bigger and more decisive" — and do it soon — in order to claim a Pyrrhic victory and go home.

the golden rule is that you should rarely if ever try to change anyone’s mind. this is a fool’s errand cuz it rarely works, & even when it does the belief you installed is way weaker, the person becomes resentful, & everything dynamic from then on becomes borrowed instead of owned. you can only gently probe until you understand why they arrived at that conclusion. then you must move on like it never happened. this is true for any type of relationship including professional but esp true in romantic dynamics.
