@PluginHyBrad @the_autopian No harm intended! The first automobile thing just gets me worked up, and I wrote about it there SO MANY times. The point of this post is getting the truth out about the story of the first automobile. That's it!

I don't know why @MercedesBenz keeps with this line; it's just not true and it debases how important the Patent-Motorwagen really was. It just wasn't "the first automobile," not by a long shot

@JessePeltan Exactly. Many years ago, I said that non-autonomous combustion vehicles would be like riding a horse while using a flip phone, but you can’t cram a good idea down the throat of legacy industries. They just insist on dying.

The fact that Ford still thinks the reason to make EVs is to reduce emissions tells you how little legacy auto understands this paradigm shift. Autonomy is a tidal wave. Once cars are autonomous, the operational costs of combustion vehicles become completely untenable. Reducing emissions will be a side effect. Electric vehicles are a fundamentally better platform for autonomy. This is like investing in new whaling ships after the commercialization of incandescent lights.
