This weekend I built a usable MVP during the Pi Day contest with @boltdotnew and @AnthropicAI. Used Claude Sonnet 4.6 throughout and the experience was crazy smooth. End result: a real business audit app for SMBs and trades that’s already in a usable state. Still more to build, but I’m pumped with how far it came in one weekend. audit.houseofgarda.com

You’re competing with a machine. Here’s how the system actually works: 1/ Your resume hits an ATS (Applicant Tracking System) Companies use software like Workday, Greenhouse, Lever. Before a recruiter sees anything, the system scans your resume for: • Keywords • Skills • Job titles • Experience matches If it doesn’t match the job description → auto rejection. No human involved. ⸻ 2/ Formatting alone can kill your chances ATS often fails to parse: • fancy templates • columns • graphics • icons Your resume might look beautiful… …but the AI reads it as empty text. ⸻ 3/ Keyword matching decides everything Example: Job description says: “React, TypeScript, REST APIs” Your resume says: “Frontend development with modern JS frameworks” Human: “Makes sense.” ATS: No keyword match → reject ⸻ 4/ The brutal reality Hundreds of applications arrive. Recruiters don’t read them all. The ATS filters 70–80% first. Humans only see the survivors. ⸻ 5/ How people beat the system The ones getting interviews usually: • Mirror keywords from the job post • Customize resumes per role • Use simple formatting • Avoid graphics/templates • Add measurable results They’re not gaming recruiters. They’re optimizing for the robot. ⸻ Modern hiring isn’t: You vs other candidates. It’s: You vs an algorithm first. And most people don’t even know the game they’re playing.
